Excellent Critical Edition
By MsEnglishTeacher
I am a high-school English teacher, and have been examining the various versions of electronic versions of Romeo and Juliet for my Kindle Fire. I am looking at readability of the text, quality of explanations, another addtional features, and of course, price.
Basic Features: This version features very readable formatting. The lines appear in the correct format (i.e. lines of iambic pentameter), and spaces separate each speaker. There are extensive footnotes, accessable through a link that takes you to a page of footnotes (and an easy to use back to to page link). Line numbers are provided (a very rare feature in electronic version of Shakespeare)!
While the Ignatius Critical Edition is one of the pricier editions of Romeo and Juliet at $5.99, it includes several engaging critical essays, ranging in topic from the language and poetry of Shakespeare in the play to film and stage adaptations to love and politics. These critical essays are likely the reason for the pricing.
My one complaint is that there are no links to Acts or scenes. The menu features links to the introduction, the critical essays, and the play, but there is no subdivision within the play itself. This, however, can be surmounted with the bookmark feature.
Overall, this is one of my favorite e-versions of Romeo and Juliet because of the critical essays and scholarly thought.

Wish it didn't have to exist, but it's good at what it does
By Cynesige
There is something silly and depressing, and yet useful, about a book like this. It does exactly what you'd expect it to do: convert history's most masterful prose into garbage modern idiomatic English. Some of that is so comical that you'll find yourself sending snippets to your friends by email for days, and they will write back, "LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL". You'll feel guilty for reading it, and you may end up wondering whether you have just aided a wee bit in the general collapse of western civilization.
All that said, I'm really glad I purchased it. Shakespeare is hard to read. Some of the archaic language can be sussed out with patience, but some of it is impenetrable. The real prose appears on the left side, and the ... for lack of a better word ... "translation" appear on the right (facing) pages. Nobody's stopping you from reading the real prose on the left pages and ignoring the modernized version. But when you hit those words and phrases that can't be sussed out, a quick glance at the right-hand page leaves you with an "ah, I get it now".
It's a very useful tool that I wish wasn't necessary but found very beneficial. And when all is said and done, it got me re-exploring Shakespeare, and I'll probably buy others in the series, too.

An Excellent Edition
By Rais3dByWolv3s
This review is for The Arden Shakespeare: Second Series edition of R&J.
A lot of times with Shakespeare you want a heavily annotated edition. For depth and detail, I'd grab this Arden edition one before the Folger. The annotations are far more detailed. They offer variant readings of the line and a wealth of contextual info. Folger tends to content itself with a swift modern rephrasing and moves on.
If you want a detail and just a basic gloss on the language, then you might prefer Folger.
Or perhaps get both. Then you could compare readings, &c.
Sadly, there doesn't seem to be any annotated edition that works well in Kindle (that I could discover). Paper still works, though.
