The need to bridge (or at least narrow) the semantic gap has been one of the driving forces behind current VIR research. Additionally, other related research problems and market opportunities have started to emerge, offering a broad range of exciting problems for computer scientists and engineers to work on. In this introductory book, we focus on a subset of VIR problems where the media consists of images, and the indexing and retrieval methods are based on the pixel contents of those images -- an approach known as content-based image retrieval (CBIR). We present an implementation-oriented overview of CBIR concepts, techniques, algorithms, and figures of merit. Most chapters are supported by examples written in Java, using Lucene (an open-source Java-based indexing and search implementation) and LIRE (Lucene Image REtrieval), an open-source Java-based library for CBIR. It's a very good book.
I recommend it everyone who is interested in Visual Information Retrieval. The introduction to LIRE which is a powerfull tool is very clear and informative. The two authors explain the complex topic very comprehensible. I learned really a lot from this book!!

Great Eagles, Springsteen, Journey classics

This book is chockful of great songs written in easy to play keys. I especially enjoy the Eagles, Springsteen, and Journey hits included in the book. Whiter Shade of Pale(Procul Harum) is easy to play,but captures the baroque feel of the original.
When I hunt for piano books on the Internet, I use Dan Coates as a search parameter. He arranges great songs from all eras with enough complexity so that they don't sound like single note "fake book" arrangements.

Only weakness is binding. If you want to play from this book, get it spiral bound at your nearest office supply store. Best $5 you'll ever spend !

Beautiful Songs to play

I have started playing again after 45 years of just listening.. Now that I have more time on my hands I wanted to learn to play some songs that I love on my new digital piano. After 2 weeks of receiving this book and practicing, I am able to play some of the songs, although slowly. I am already playing Desperado, Drive, Eye of the Tiger, and Hotel California. The songs sound so nice I sometimes practice for hours. I had searched the internet and found this book to have more of the songs I loved than others, and at a decent price.

Great Selection

This is a great selection of classic rock hits from the 60's thru the 80's done in "easy piano" style by Dan Coates. Many of these 50 selections are the same as those in the Rolling Stones top 500 vol. 1 and 2. The selections I've played around with so far sound much like the original piece of music. They do take a while for this one year student of piano to master. A great piano sheet music investment.

About the Author

Paul S. Boyer was Merle Curti Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A leading authority on American history, his writings span the social origins of the Salem witchcraft outbreak to the cultural impact of the atomic bomb and the political implications of Bible prophecy belief in contemporary America. A history textbook author and editor of reference works, including The Oxford Companion to United States History, he published in many general-interest periodicals. He also appeared on PBS, BBC, the History Channel, and the Discovery Channel, and lectured at some 100 colleges and universities in the United States, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia, and Switzerland.

Great quick read

Few books tell you the story of the United States starting from Columbus to be Arab Spring within a few hours. I highly recommend it to people who want to learn the basics of the US history and evolution.

Comprehensive, but not entirely accurate nor balanced

American History: A Very Short Introduction provides its reader with as comprehensive a look at American political, social and cultural history as is possible in under 200 small pages (the standard format for the "Very Short Introduction" series, whose books are not only short but small as well) and in a well written manner. Virtually every event, person of significance and movement in American history receives at least a mention, which must have been a difficult task to accomplish given the strictures. What it does not do, however, is provide consistently up to date scholarship or a proper sense of proportion of America's triumphs to failures. It also contains a few errors and some of Boyer's interpretations of events will provoke disagreement with those who do not share his political leanings.

Boyer essentially begins with the English settlement of North America, dispensing with the pre-Columbian native peoples, Leif Ericson and non-English Europeans in only a few pages. The colonial period is one of the book's strengths as Boyer explains the development of the English settlements at Jamestown and Plymouth and the social development of the New World as different from that of the Old. The events leading to the Revolution are also nicely cataloged, and Boyer takes us from the post-Revolutionary war period through the Gilded Age in a fairly conventional manner.

Some of Boyer's interpretations of events rely on dated scholarship, however. A simplistic search for foreign markets accounts entirely for the Spanish-American War. His account of the New Deal places the stock market crash in the role of catalyst of the Great Depression failing to mention the role of monetary policy, which is at the core of today's economic understanding. He also dredges up the traditional misconception that Americans' fondness for coffee dates from the Boston Tea Party and incorrectly cites the date of England's Glorious Revolution. Boyer also cites a famous utterance by Andrew Jackson in defiance of the Supreme Court that is considered apocryphal.

Although explicitly Boyer strives for objectivity he does not always achieve it. His account is generally well balanced through Reconstruction, but his leftward leanings emerge shortly thereafter and his interpretation of events from the Gilded Age to the present too often becomes predictable and selective. Progressives are, unsurprisingly for a University of Wisconsin professor, lauded and nearly every legislative enactment of the New Deal and Great Society is given space. Like many historians, though, Boyer mistakes these enactments as achievements in their own right, and rarely analyzes whether they, in fact, accomplished their goals. For instance, he credits President Clinton with welfare reform but never asks why a Democratic president would see the need to reform it in the first place. His characterization of today's Tea Party as an offshoot of the religious right ignores the firestorm that occurred a result of policies that were perceived to "bailout" the impecunious (whether on Wall Street, in the housing market or the auto industry) at the expense of those who had behaved in a fiscally responsible manner in the Tea Party members' views.

Boyer concludes by cataloging America's many challenges and faults as he finds them today. Nonetheless, he concludes that "when the balance is drawn, America's record of achievement in advancing human well-being may ultimately outweigh the rest and prove a more lasting measure of national greatness than transient imperial power, military might, or a mere abundance of ephemeral material goods." The reader will likely need consult another book to understand, however, why that is.

Tokugawa Ieyasu founded a dynasty of rulers, organized a system of government and set in train the re-orientation of the religion of Japan so that he would take the premier place in it. Calm, capable and entirely fearless, Ieyasu deliberately brought the opposition to a head and crushed in a decisive battle, after which he made himself Shogun, despite not being from the Minamoto clan. He organized the Japanese legal and educational systems and encouraged trade with Europe (playing off the Protestant powers of Holland and England against Catholic Spain and Portugal). This book remains one of the few volumes on Tokugawa Ieyasu which draws on more material from Japanese sources than quotations from the European documents from his era and is therefore much more accurate and thorough in its examination of the life and legacy of one of the greatest Shoguns.

The main character changed his name 5 times during his life

This is a hard book to review. It is filled with detail about this vital time in the history of Japan (Ieyasu was Japan's "Julius Caesar" and placed his stamp on the next 250 years of history), and is very scholarly. It isn't Sadler's fault that the names of the most important leaders of the time were terribly repetitious and impossible to keep straight (Nobunaga, Nobuo, Masanobu, Nobuyasa, Hideyasa, Hideyori, Hideyoshi, Hidetada), but he could have given us a little primer on what the various components of them meant and how to remember what side they were on. It doesn't help that the main character changed his name 5 times during his life, which wasn't at all unusual for Japan, or that great lords honored people by "giving" them a syllable from their own names. It is Sadler's fault that he writes with total disregard for the use of pronouns, making it even harder to figure out who is doing what to whom. This is a great book for scholars of Japan (who seem to be the intended audience) but hard going for the interested reader who doesn't know it all already. Some of the book is fascinating and very well written; other parts are almost incomprehensible. I was trained as a historian, and read this book to learn more about Japanese history, but honestly Shogun by James Clavell (obviously based on Sadler's book) was much easier to follow, and stuck to the actual history quite well. If this is a period you're interested in, and you're willing to keep a list of who's who, or read the book twice, then give it a go. If you want to learn about the period and don't mind being confused about 1/4th the time, then it's fine. If you're looking for an easy book to read, not to study, then this is not for you.

SHOGUN

Tokugawa Ieyasu is one of the most interesting figures in Japanese history, made even more so by the fictional Lord Toranaga in James Clavell's novel "Shogun". This book presents his life story, but some of the information seems a little on the legendary side - to me at least. However, it does reveal the reality behind some of the incidents in the novel.
The book arrived in good condition, and the seller was prompt in sending it.

Excellent fascinating in depth look - a must-have classic

A quite in-depth look, full of fascinating details, insightful anecdotes and colourful stories that immerse you in the era and the character of Ieyasu. I read it through in a few days and immediately started reading it again. The author's style is subtle, unobtrusive with occasional humourous turns of phrase or insights that delight the reader. If you love feudal Japan you must have this classic work.
