Another Delightful, Gay Regency Romance.
By Tex Reader
4.0 of 5 stars –
I love gay historical romances, and this one certainly sated my hunger. I had read Alexandra Ainsworth’s first book in this series, The Duke in Denial, and I think the second book was even better. Not only that, it definitely worked well as a standalone – the story had moved on to a new pair of MCs, but still with connections to characters in the first book, enough background to bring people up to date, and a nice, conclusive ending.
The two MCs (Geoffrey and Etienne), were nicely drawn, and you’ve got to love ‘em. While I would have liked more character development of the supporting cast, I still enjoyed the spotlight on the two MCs. In fact, they weren’t perfect, they had their own foibles, and were distinct. I thought it was interesting as well as realistic that they both had a tendency to belittle themselves, which can be characteristic of the shame that some feel as part of the gay experience, especially more so in this more repressive time. Ainsworth portrayed them with believable motivations and backgrounds, and it made me sympathize with both.
As in the first book, Ainsworth’s style made for a light, easy read – it had a nice pace and a plot that flowed well. It was fairly straightforward and logical, with a slight mystery, which was a nice twist, if a bit predictable. I'm not an expert on the early 1800's or locale, but I do read history and historicals, and this seemed true to this place and time, which Ainsworth helped me imagine. The dialogue was easy-to-follow and useful in setting the mood, there were nice phrasings and moments throughout, and the tension built gradually. For those interested, there were a few sex scenes. I liked that they were built up to slowly, fit in with the storyline, and were pretty hot (which made this a bit more racy than a typical regency), yet could have been even more sensual with a bit more erotic descriptions of what men feel.
I was pleasantly engaged throughout, which was assisted by Ainsworth’s nice use of some traditional romantic novel techniques, such as short chapters, teasing with info not fully revealed until later, characters keeping secrets and will the other find out, and misinterpreting of events and feelings. The first third of the book was a bit melodramatic, with the typical romantic urges, doubts and consternations; but that was understandable, given that this was after all a regency romance and it helped set the mood. I do have to admit, though, that this was carried a little too far in that there was a bit of implausibility at the end, making for a convenience of circumstances. So this was more on the lighter side of things, rather than a substantive, complex plot with deep characterizations.
Overall, this was a fun book, good for those looking for a lighter romance and characters to go with it.

Hearts Are Captured
By Bo
This sequel to "The Duke in Denial" is as familiar, yet as completely different, as that book. The familiarity is the setting and the characters--almost all of them were central to the previous book, even the chief protagonists, Geoffrey Hammerstead, and to a small extent, Etienne Rivaud. The difference is that this one moves along more swiftly and is exponentially more erotic than the previous book, and that is what helps make it a fascinating, galloping, exciting read.
That and Geoffrey, who is really far more aware of, but no less in denial of, his sexuality than was Sebastian Lewis, the duke in denial. That and most especially Etienne, around whom the plot, secrets and love centers.
This one has so many ins-and-outs, ups-and-downs, and OMG-whats? in it that in less skillful hands it could have been a mess. Fortunately, Alexandra Ainsworth has a deft way of pulling it all off and it is a pleasure, though sometimes harrowing but always heated, all the way through.
And from the bonus first chapter from "The Viscount's Duel," the next book, it looks like the characters, setting, and nasty plots will continue. Thank goodness for that!
