The book presents digital signal processing and pattern recognition techniques for analysis of biomedical signals. It begins with an introduction on the nature of biomedical signals, such as the action potential, electrocardiogram, muscle signals, brain signals, heart sounds, and speech. A detailed review of signals and systems is presented to set the stage for filtering of biomedical signals to remove noise and various artifacts. Several filtering techniques are presented with applications, from simple averaging to advanced and sophisticated optimal filtering methods. Techniques for detection and characterization of events and waves within a given signal are described. Several advanced techniques are described for adaptive analysis of non-stationary signals using time-frequency, wavelet, and other forms of representation. PreSchool-Grade 2-Tough Boris is a treasure. This easy-to-read picture book features a repetitive, engaging text; a very popular subject; and an interesting subplot played out in the colorful illustrations. Boris von der Borch is a scruffy and fearless pirate who is nonetheless tender enough to cry when his pet parrot dies. While the brief text simply lists his attributes (and those of all other pirates), the energetic watercolors paint the larger picture. Boris and his crew dig up some buried loot and divide it (unevenly, of course), squabble over a prized violin, and enjoy the cabin boy's impromptu concert (after he's been caught stealing the instrument from Boris). As the story ends, the boy is taken ashore, mourning his exile from the ship but still clutching the precious violin. A compelling and entertaining tale of adventure.

Ages 4-8. This picture book is full of surprises, both in the simple text and in the dramatic underlying story the pictures tell. On one level, it's a celebration of a glorious villain; like all pirates, tough Boris is massive and scruffy and greedy and fearless and scary. Brown's bold watercolor paintings show him in all his hideous glory, huge bristles sticking out of his chin, anger in his eyes, cutlass in his hand, as he handles his motley crew. But when his parrot dies, "he cried and cried. All pirates cry." As you go back over the pictures, you notice that his cheeky green parrot has always been with Boris, usually on his shoulder or perched on a finger. You also notice another whole story, not mentioned in the text. A small barefoot boy with a violin case stows away on the pirate ship. Tough Boris makes the boy play his instrument, and all the fierce crew members stand still and listen. When Boris' parrot dies, the boy and the pirate grieve together, their shoulders bowed. The boy also cries at the end when the pirate ship brings him back home and leaves him with his violin and bow alone on the shore. Unfortunately, the design is confusing; the boy appears on the imprint page but then remains hidden until the middle of the book; some kids may be puzzled about where he comes from. However, for those who look carefully, the wordless story is a poignant counterpoint to the swashbuckling adventure scenes. Hazel Rochman

and beautiful illustrations

Mem Fox's _Tough Boris_ is a picture book about Boris Von Der Borch and his gang of pirates. The text is very simple. Basically, it simply states "Boris was greedy." for one pair of pages, and then "All pirates are greedy." on the next pair, and then substitutes other words for greedy, like "massive," and "scruffy," etc.
The pictures tell the story, though. Boris and his group find a treasure chest, filled with treasure and a violin. The crew drags the treasure chest aboard the ship, and divvies up the loot. A boy steals the violin from Boris's room, and Boris seeks the boy out for punishment. The boy plays the violin so well, however, that Boris has him spared. Next, Boris' pet parrot dies, and gets a solemn and appropriate burial at sea, in the violin case. Boris and all the pirates are very sad, and, as the text states, "all pirates cry."
This book required repeated readings with my 3-year old to get the whole story. The simple text says so little, but in the end the text complements the illustrations well.
Kathryn Brown's illustrations are wonderful. The colors are bright, and the renderings of the pirates are fantastic. They are the best pirates I've seen in over a dozen pirate picture books. While I'm at it, I'll salute the author and illustrator together for creating a pirate picture book which doesn't include any battles, swordplay, cannons, or gunplay.

Perfect for Grieving Little Pirates

My mom found this book for my three year old "tough pirate" daughter and gave it to her in preparation for the death of her little brother. It was such good medicine! She asked to have it read to her many times a day for months - and we still read it almost daily. This book was so much better for her than books that attempt to help children understand death and deal with the subject more directly, and it didn't insult the intelligence and insight that she and all young children have. It allowed her to enjoy a great story - in words and pictures - and process the meaning in her own way.

Tough Boris is a wonderful story which students love to read along with. The words such as scary, tough, and massive are rich with expression and children enjoy speaking those words. There is also a wonderful subplot which complements the main plot very well.

About the Author

Michael "Bird-Dawg" Bergdahl worked with Sam Walton as Wal-Mart's Director of the Home Office People Division. He has also worked as a turnaround specialist for American Eagle Outfitters, and prior to that, he was on the supply side of retailing with PepsiCo's Frito-Lay Division. Currently, Bergdahl is a full-time speaker and business coach—drawing on his twenty-seven years of business experience. His first book, What I Learned from Sam Walton: How to Compete and Thrive in a Wal-Mart World, was also published by Wiley.

Verbose and Sophmoric (the book, not Walton)

Bergdahl's book contains the "10 Rules" posted in the company headquarters that Sam Walton viewed as key to success. Unfortunately, Bergdahl's accompanying explanation adds little, so I have chosen to add my own instead - acquired from other sources.

The 10 Rules are as follows:

1)Commit to achieving success and always be passionate. (High goals.)

2)Share success with those who have helped you. (Wal-Mart's stock plan was an important driver in the beginning; lately, the stock price has flattened and declined.)

3)Motivate yourself and others to achieve your dreams.

4)Communicate with people and show you care. (Sam continually visited his stores, reviewed achievements, and complimented his people for their ideas and accomplishments.)

5)Appreciate and recognize people for their effort and results. (See #4)

6)Celebrate your own and other's accomplishments. (See #4)

7)Listen to others and learn from their ideas. (Walton always asked his people for their ideas, and gave them the freedom to innovate to match local preferences. He was also famous for studying his competitors, and loved to copy their good ideas.)

8)Exceed expectations of customers and others.

9)Control expenses and save your way to prosperity. (Wal-Mart has become well known for its weekly expense reports that include key ratios (eg. labor) vs. sales; woe to the store manager that is not on top of the situation.)

10)Swim upstream, be different, and challenge the status quo. (Wal-Mart blazed new directions in store re-supply, use of information technology, initial store location strategy, creating the "Super-Store" concept, and always low pricing - each were key to his success.)

I agree with the earlier review that describes this book as "verbose." This is not as good as Bergdahl's earlier book. Read the other book he wrote instead. It is much better.

It is amazing to me how San Walton's 10 rules are different depending on who wrote the book! For a good read, read Walton's own book, MADE IN AMERICA, and then read the books written by some of his former employees.

Excellent Read!

Tony Bacon's books are known to be extremely informative and interesting to read, and this new Squier (spelled S.Q.U.I.E.R) book is no exception. He has covered Squier from the begining in 1982 to the present, with some fantastic photo's included.

This is not a specialist / collectors book, so if you are a hardened fan of a particular model or era, then don't expect pages of detailed collectors info on your chosen subject, as this is not the point of this book. The information is well researched and (in my opinion) appears to be extremely accurate, as I would expect from such a respected author.
I had thought a book on the Squier brand would be almost impossible to write because of all the different models and countries of manufacture over the past 30 years, but Tony has pulled it off!...well done!

I can highly recommend this book to anyone interested in how the Squier name has evolved over the years, but this is not a JV, SQ or even 'E series enthusiasts bible, though there is a fair bit of general info on the JV models, including some cool photographs.

A facinating read with some real eye openers!

Excellent history of Squier (by Fender) electric guitars

Excellent history of Squier (by Fender) electric guitars. This gives the reader a sense of the ups and downs of the sub-brand. The author conducted many interviews will people involved with Squier, from the people who ran Fender in the early 1980s, to the Japanese contract manufacturers, to the Squier bosses in charge in then 2000s. Tony Bacon describes all the Squier models, even some of the short-lived ones that were experiments of Squier's frequently changing leadership. Bacon doesn't claim the book to be a resource for identifying when and where a particular guitar was made, but the appendices are the main source of this info for Squier owners. The only thing that put me off was the format - two facing pages of text followed by two pages of photos throughout the book. So when I was reading something particularly interesting, I had to turn the page twice to keep going. The publisher probably wanted to appeal to those who like "guitar porn."

Really enjoyed this!

The Fender story is already quite we'll documented. Tony Bacon's Squier Electrics fills in the gaps for us Fender fans who keep a Squier on the guitar stand in the living room while our Fender is in its case under the bed. We're on the wrong side of 50 and after taking a few decades off from playing we're amazed at the quality and affordability of the Squier range. He even has the sunburst Squier 51 on the cover of the book: the model the got me back into playing after a 25 year hiatus. The book gives a good back-story how the Squier came to be and how the Squier 51 brought the brand into cult status. His book predates the Minecraft craze but a future edition might show the parallel between the popularity of the Squier 51 and Minecraft and the ability for users to customize them. There really is a seed of a new way of doing business that Squier seems to have embraced, or created, and Tony's book gives us insight into the origins of that seed.

Meticulously Edited and Eminently Useful

I'm pretty late to the clarinet (I play various other instruments), and I've only studied with my teacher nine or so of the Rose Etudes so far, but the ones I've studied have advanced my technique surprisingly fast and I've found them very musical and pleasing pieces. David Hite has edited these in careful detail such that I never have to wonder when to take a breath or how to interpret a phrase.

EDIT: One year later I've studied all but a few of the Rose Etudes, and what I said above still applies.

Must Own

I'm a music major at Western Carolina University and I use this book every day. Also a large portion of all county and all district solos come from this book (at least in north carolina they do). Plus this book its just good for a short audition piece if your looking for an �tude. If you are a clarinet player and you want to be serious just save yourself the time and buy this now.

A MUST-HAVE for IBPsych teachers and their students: I have taught IB Pscyh since 2011, and I must say that my life became considerably easier when this Study Guide was published! It has all the studies you need to cover the syllabus, and every study is thoroughly explained, and includes evaluative points as well as discussions. Each unit is corresponds to a Learning Outcome, which provides transparency and overview for the students as well as for the teacher. Make sure the students know, however, that they must also read the Course Companion that goes with the Study Guide in order to benefit fully from the material.

It is very helpful and easy to follow

The standard study book for this course. It is very helpful and easy to follow. If you have no background you would be able to use this but it would not be as helpful as it does not go in to any great detail and provides very little background knowledge. To be used as a study guide however, it is very useful.
