Need Part 2 ASAP!....

“Side Chick Catching Main Chick Feelings” by B.M. Hardin is more of an urban storyline that I have read written by her. She proves that despite this being out the normal for her that she is still able to captivate you with her words. I love an author that can challenge themselves and steps outside their comfort zone. It shows a level of understanding that you can’t get too complacent with only writing one style only. This book had minimal spelling/grammar issues (I’m no editor) that I did see but was not a complete distraction. It shows that you take value in what you put out/ present to your reading audience.

Moet: I can’t even fathom where to begin when discussing her. I don’t even know if I should be mad at her or just feel sad for her. Honestly, there is no amount of love worth all of that to go through pure nonsense. However, there are people that deal with/ tolerate worse in real life … So I guess you can never say never on what you will and will not do if faced with the same situations…

Drake: has the typical I can do “Me” but you better not do what I do mentality. At first you want to be upset but technically you couldn’t but so much. People will treat you how you allow them too and to test how far they can go. They will put you in situations that have you questioning yourself yet you don’t walk away. Such as in this case, it gives the impression that you are “ok” with it. I can’t wait to see how he truly reacts when everything comes to the light…

This book has so many twists and turns, and unexpected connections that you have to pay attention or you will miss something. This book had me on edge trying to figure out what was going to happen next, and I was so happy that it was not predictable that it would end the way that it did. I am looking for and excited about Part 2 … Need that like Yesterday ASAP!

I couldn't get into this book for NOTHING!! It was just too boring. It was long...drawn out... And unbelievable. I CANT read part 2. Hardin is a great author, but this book wasn't good

Not your typical "side chick" tale...

Six degrees of separation is real. This isn't the typical story of a side chick. Mo�t gave her all to Drake and takes being loyal to a new level. We all know every woman has a breaking point but hers seemed far away as she put up with being his "side chick" for quite sometime due to their long history that dates back to childhood. Just as things begin to look up, the author throws a huge plot twist into the mix. This was a very entertaining read that will surely have the reader moving quickly to part II.

(There were some noticeable editing issues.)

Wait for a 2nd edition...

I've read only 120 pages so far and decided to already post my review anyway.

The book performs a rather good job in presenting a catalogue of design patterns for embedded systems: each pattern is provided with C code examples, an UML diagram, some clever explanations about its benefits, hints for its implementation, related patterns with which it can be combined, and other useful information.

The author chose to structure his code as object-oriented whenever possible, even for the classes that will clearly never be instantiated more than once. This results in having in every function a parameter for the object on which it must be applied and a lot of pointer dereferencing that makes at my sense the code heavier to read.

In addition, for a book about embedded systems, I would expect variables qualified as volatile when it is required, when accessing memory-mapped I/O for example (p. 83). The text has some typos (p. 81, "high-ugency" or "distribition") and some errors (p. 111, observer pattern: "the clients simply offer a subscription function that allows clients (...)".

If I had to stop my review of the book at this point, I would probably give it 4 stars.

Unfortunately I am not. I got rapidly annoyed of continuously reading so badly formatted code. The indentation and braces are set completely at random throughout the whole book. On page 29, the author shows the overall structure with some completely wrong pseudo code: "Switch", missing case statements, a strange "If { ]" block... Moreover there are a lot of strange constructs and approximations in the code snippets: useless nested blocks {{ }} (p 56); for (p. 20), if (p.72) and while (p. 71) statements finished with a semi-colon; '/n' instead of '\n' (p. 117); #endif without corresponding #ifdef (p. 105); side-effects in printf (p. 20); on some pages the keywords and function names are highlighted, on some other not, etc, etc, etc.

The book has been printed although it was clearly not ready for that. Come on, even the link to the editor webpage on the back cover is wrong (have you ever heard of the htpp protocol: "htpp:/ [...]")! I'm not willing to read a book that has not been reviewed well enough; therefore I give it the minimal rating.

Bruce, fix the typos, clean your code, release a second edition, and you will get your 4 stars...

Poor code download - and what about #include "mutex.h"

The short: By all means, buy and work through Test Driven Development for Embedded C (Pragmatic Programmers) by James Grenning before you buy this book. You will not regret it.

The long: Powell's book is full of extensive code examples, which is a good thing. But, to my surprise, the code downloads are in MS Word format. About the only advantage of this is, that you can relatively easily correlate the sample code to the book.

The main drawback, however, is that this code in the you get it, has never been compiled, linked, or tested in any shape or form. Definitely, NEVER.

The include file "mutex.h", in particular, is referenced dozens of times in example code. From what I can tell, it is Powell's own version of a mutex implementation, but there is NOTHING in the book or in the code, not even pseudocode or anything. Basically, this means that dozens of examples are impossible to compile unless you improvise your own mutex.h (easy), and they are impossible to link or test, unless you also design your own implementation of Powell's mutex.

Up to this point, I would still have given the book 3 points, because it still contains a lot of useful stuff.

Enter the publishers: Elsevier, "Addison-Wesley" and their likes. I would give them a minus-two rating, if it were possible. They are no longer reader-oriented, and delegate the real reader support to third-party sites, which leave to be desired as well. As for Elsevier, they seem to specialize in medical books, and little else. Why would they even want to publish this book? As for "Addison-Wesley", just enter enter their web address into your browser, and you will be delighted to find yourself at Pearson, merrily offering you "Solutions for higher education" instead of what you used to be able to find at a publisher's web site. No browsing their books, no decent support, no contacting the author, no discussion group, no discounted eBook upgrade for owners of a hard copy, no nothing, no thank you (funnily, their German site at least allows you to browse and order books, at least).

Finally, there is no reference to the editor webpage or the code download in the eBook, so if you don't own the printed copy, or you don't happen to have it with you, unfortunately you are out of luck...

Having subtracted the publisher's score from the book' score, unfortunately that leaves only one star.

The only reason I bought this book is that currently there are no alternatives, and I already own "Test Driven Development for Embedded C" by James Grenning, which I definitely recommend you buy and study first, before tackling Powell's book. It also gives a better introduction to using object orientation in C than does Powell's book and, in my opinion, a few much more elegant examples. Pragmatic Programming are excellent publishers and you will enjoy everything that the publishers of this book chose to neglect.

definitely not polished at all

I am going to have to agree with the points made in Vomkap Biskairo's 1-star review. It's hard to take a book seriously with so many coding typos, since it wastes your time and confuses you(example: pg 116 struct GasNotificationHandle declaration is incomplete). The (in my opinion) overly object oriented handling of every example detracts from key points and makes the code hard to read. Also adding to the difficulty is that there is no syntax highlighting to the code, and the filenames for each snippet appear ambiguously after the snippet equidistant from the next snippet. I also wish he covered singletons--even to a short extent.
This book does have some good concepts, but to deal with reading the code with typos and object rich format, I would recommend this book for someone who's very familiar with C and object patterns. If these problems were fixed, I wouldn't hesitate to give it 4 or 5 stars.

Michael McDowell (1950-1999) is best known for his screenplays to the films Beetlejuice and The Nightmare Before Christmas, but he was also the author of several excellent and underrated Southern Gothic horror novels, of which The Amulet (1979) was the first. Originally published as a pulp paperback, now scarce and long out-of-print, McDowell’s grimly humorous and delightfully horrific novel returns to print in this edition, which features a new introduction by Poppy Z. Brite.

The first novel of Michael McDowell; unsung American author.

"The Amulet", first published in 1979, was Michael McDowell's first paperback original. It set the pace for what was to be a marvelous career, including several other novels, such as "Cold Moon Over Babylon", "The Elementals", "Katie", "Gilded Needles" and the successful serial novel "Blackwater", to which Stephen King gives credit as his main inspiration for the "Green Mile" series.
Also, as a footnote, Michael McDowell was the creator of the screenplay and characters of the hugely successful "Beetlejuice" movie.
Set in the summer of 1965, at the dawn of the Vietnam war, this is the haunting story of a sleepy southern town called Pine Cone, and what went on there... After her husband is the casualty of a bizarre accident, young Sarah Howell slowly comes to realize that her strange, treacherous mother-in-law, is somehow behind an infernal plan of revenge.
Slowly, as a pendant in a gold chain passes from hand to hand, citizens of the town begin to die in horrid, violent ways. What is behind this? What leads a loving mother to set her children and home on fire? A dutiful policeman to turn against his wife? A friend against the other?... as the body count rises, Sarah must run against time to stop the accursed amulet... but slowly it seems to be finding her way to her.
Michael McDowell passed away on December 27, 1999. He was a lecturer at Tufts college, a Harvard Graduate and a Brandeis Ph.D... He will be sorely missed on account of his books, wickedly funny, consistently written and beautifully plotted. His characters stay with the reader even long after finishing the book. It's too bad he has been overlooked by many a horror and literature fan, for this si the real stuff... Horror as Modern Literature.

Micheal McDowell introduced me into the world of horror! You see one side of the house was reading the GoodBook everyday and the other side of the house had stacks and stacks of paperback novels of horror. So, I snuck the book out of my mother's extensive collection and was thrown into a completely different realm. In 1979, this was the first horror book I ever read and I was 14 yrs old. I couldn't put it down then and I can't now, often sometimes comparing his great writing to the new horror authors out there now......

The moment I started reading I was hooked. His writing flowed seamlessly and he was always capable of placing you right into the story itself. You got lost in his world! Every character in this book ends up being connected through an evil, cursed, "chain" of events. It eventually comes full circle in this small town, to it's original owner. A wicked mother out for vengeance for her son............

Needless to say I own all of Micheal McDowell's books and have read them all. All his books were excellent, but my favorite's will always be this one and "The Elementals".......

Sadly, this great author and screenwriter passed away in 1999. I feel he never got a chance to fully achieve the status that other great masters of horror writing did! I have a good friend that's trying to break into horror world, so I found an excellent copy on Amazon, he is 26 yrs and wanted to read the classics. It's very hard to find a copy of any of his books and it takes a lot of searching!! All this author's books are out of print, they are priceless!!!!!

Couldn't stop reading it.

I loved the book. I read so much about Michael McDowell from other reviews and I figured I'd give him a go, and he sure doesn't disappoint. The Amulet was relatively short only 340 pages, but it read as if it had so much more vastness. The story of a cursed Amulet that makes its way to person to unrelated person and they in turn kill those around them, sounds hokey, but McDowell makes it plausible with great set ups and back grounds of the characters. The story moves along at a great pace never boring and never slow it is just right, almost as if every sentence and chapter were worded with great skill and construction. The chapters were short concise, and to the point, which made reading that much more enjoyable. Why this story was never made into a great film is beyond me, since it was so compelling a story. As one set of people died and the Amulet moved on, I couldn't wait to see what will happen next, and how their method of death will be explained. Michael McDowell has a very good way of detailing the deaths and he really surprises us by not pulling any punches by killing people that many would say was unexpected, but it works. I first heard of this writer, after I read Duma Key by Stephen King. Someone is a review said that Duma Key was similar to a novel by McDowell called The Elementals, but only that much better. I later learned that Stephen King admired McDowell's work. King's Wife Tabitha even finished McDowell's last novel after his untimely death. With that said i figured he must be a good writer. I went out and purchased all of his known novels, I have Cold Moon over Babylon, The Elementals and The Black Water series complete, so I am really eager to get to his next story, I am glad I can keep such a great writer's memory alive.

I was very excited to order this book. I have been wanting to learn the language that many family speaks for awhile but have never been able to find anything that would allow me to learn since it is such an uncommon language. I haven't gotten very far in the book but I'm wishing is was bigger, but then again it is only a beginner's book. It seems to cover a wide range of topics and I'm excited to listen to the CD's. I think it is helpful if you have some experience with another foreign language first, just to get used to some of the ideas, like feminine and masculine words, which isn't really a concept we have in the english language.

The ebook was very affordable and extremely useful. As someone SLIGHTLY familiar with Spanish all the lessons made sense. I would have liked to see more indications when a Ladino word was different than the common Spanish equivalent. But otherwise this is an excellent resource.

About the Author
Asha Gomez was born in the Kerala region of Southern India, and came to settle in Atlanta when she married. In 2010 she started the "Spice Route Supper Club," where she hosted monthly dinners in her home, and soon became a sensation in the Atlanta culinary scene. She opened Cardamom Hill in 2012, which was given a "Best New Restaurant" award from Bon Appetit, Southern Living, and the James Beard foundation. Asha was named one of Food & Wine magazine's Best New Chef for both 2013 and 2014. She has now expanded her restaurants to include two other venues, The Third Space and Spice to Table. She lives in Atlanta.
Martha Hall Foose wrote the James Beard Award-winning southern cookbook, Screen Doors and Sweet Tea and A Southerly Course: Recipes & Stories from Close to Home. She lives in Oxford, Mississippi.

Great Concept & A Must For Any Cookbook Lover

I love Indian food, especially South Indian food but what an incredible idea to combine ingredients and ideas from the American South with classic Southern Indian dishes. The recipes are very easy to follow without long lists of ingredients. There are plenty of everyday recipes - think weeknight cooking for the family - as well as Sunday dinner recipes that take longer but are so worth it. The book maybe worth it for these three recipes alone: Kerala Fried Chicken & Low Country Rice Waffles with Spicy Syrup; Gilded Acorn Squash with Coconut Milk Rice and Golden Pepper Sauce; and Marcus' Turkey Kheema Sloppy Joes. All deeply flavorful, easy to prepare and so darn comforting!! Buy this book!

small but straight to the point

this book is smaller than i thought it was going to be. but i guess i should've checked the dimension before. anyway, it's still a five star book all in all. loved seeing Nico's rough, nonDW related stuff. no words, just pure awesome character design/observations goodness. this dude can make a beautiful, thought provoking drawing out of situations most people would consider mundane.

It's is a nice little sketchbook detailing a lot of N. Marlet's day to day sketches. It is a processed sketchbook, however all the pages are clean and demonstrate his drawing very clearly

No dragons or pandas in here

I have been searching for the dragon sketches from the credits of "How to Train Your Dragon" since the movie was released. A Dreamworks employee on Facebook told me that this sketchbook was the only way to find them, so I was very excited to order it. Beware, future buyers! There are zero dragons (or pandas, or any other Dreamworks work) in this book. Returning the item was easy, but I'm out a round-trip of shipping. Pretty lame.

The product description needs to be more detailed and actually describe what's in the book.
