Great for R users

This book is the text for a graduate course in Geography. We have been through several chapters. The chapters are short and filled with excellent information, but at times the explanation could be more thorough. Having the R code and data (available from the companion website!) is extremely helpful in that it allows students to understand concepts and their implementations.

About the Author
BARRY GERHART is Professor of Management and Human Resources and the Bruce R. Ellig Distinguished Chair in Pay and Organizational Effectiveness, School of Business, University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has also served as department chair or area coordinator at Cornell, Vanderbilt, and Wisconsin. His research interests include compensation, human resource strategy, international human resources, and employee retention. Professor Gerhart received his BS in psychology from Bowling Green State University and his PhD in industrial relations from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research has been published in a variety of outlets, including the Academy of Management Annals, Academy of Management Journal, Annual Review of Psychology, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Journal of Applied Psychology, Management and Organization Review, and Personnel Psychology. He has co-authored two books in the area of compensation. He serves on the editorial boards of journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of World Business, Management & Organization Review, and Personnel Psychology. Professor Gerhart is a past recipient of the Heneman Career Achievement Award, the Scholarly Achievement Award, and of the International Human Resource Management Scholarly Research Award, all from the Human Resources Division, Academy of Management. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Management, the American Psychological Association, and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

George T. Milkovich is the M. P. Catherwood Professor at the ILR School, Cornell University. He studies and writes about how people get paid and what difference it makes. People's compensation has been his interest for over 30 years. His research has resulted in numerous publications. Four have received national awards for their contributions.

Jerry Newman (B.A., U of Michigan; M.A., Ph.D, U of Minnesota) is Distinguished Professor of Organization and Human Resources at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Many visible sections are obstructive

The highlighted sections are extremely difficult to read because of the background color. Most of the grey background has valuable definitions; however, the print is slightly a darker grey that blends into the background. Maybe the printer would consider modifying this design in future publications so that the readers do not have this type of barrier.

poorly written, wierd jokes throughout

This book is blah. Barely any graphics, charts, or pictures to spice things up, and it is black and white which you don't realize how boring a text book can be until they take the color out.

Also, the authors try to make weird jokes through out the book that really detract from the point they are trying to teach.
Example: Page 306, "The oil that lubricates the compensation engine (email the authors if you agree this is a horrible metaphor!) is performance measurement and performance management."

What....Why would they say that? If its a horrible metaphor why publish it?!

Example: page 306 again:
"Who buys an explorer that gets 17 mpg when gas now costs over $4/gallon? (except of course a dumb second author! By the way, it's a really pretty red!) HR can't control these types of environmental obstacles, after all."

.....did they just refer to one of the authors as dumb? why? THIS is what I mean. Its through out the whole book.

Example stories not very good. If you are a teacher, I would look for another book.

Great price compared to 11th edition

My instructor let us get this edition (10th) and it is almost identical to the new 11th with a $150 price difference. Make sure you ask your professors first before purchasing though.

About the Author
Edwin H. Friedman (1932-1996), a family therapist and ordained rabbi, was born in New York City and worked for more than 35 years in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Well known in the fields of mental health and pastoral education, Edwin H. Friedman brought his unique blend of systems thinking, motivational style, and common sense to his highly regarded work as a consultant and leadership trainer to diverse professional and government organizations.

A Brilliant Work

Ed Friedman provided his readers and students with more than information about the human condition. He has given them a way to think, not just what to think. This book of fables, as the study booklet that accompanies it makes clear, is about life questions. A great deal of what one can know about life and self depends upon (a) where one stands when asking questions, and (b) the clarity and orientation of one's questions. The greatness of Ed Friedman is the clarity with which he has engaged the world. His "Generation to Generation" is a powerfully clear treatise on self and systems that has had a profound effect on thousands. I am given to understand that his daughter is arranging for editing and publishing "A Failure of Nerve" (available since 1999 only as a bound manuscript, loosely edited). Ed Friedman learned systems theory from Msurray Bowen (1913-1990), and his variant of Bowen Theory remains one of the clearest and most compelling expositions of the power of Bowen's work. "Friedman's Fables" is a testament to what can be done with Bowen when one thinks about the human condition with freedom and creativity, informed by the discipline of the most mature theory of human functioning today.

Diana Hacker personally class-tested her handbooks with nearly four thousand students over thirty-five years at Prince George s Community College in Maryland, where she was a member of the English faculty. Hacker handbooks, built on innovation and on a keen understanding of the challenges facing student writers, are the most widely adopted in America. Hacker handbooks, all published by Bedford/St. Martin s, include The Bedford Handbook, Ninth Edition (2014); A Writer s Reference, Eighth Edition (2015); Rules for Writers, Eighth Edition (2016); and A Pocket Style Manual, Seventh Edition (2015).Nancy Sommers, who has taught composition and directed composition programs for thirty years, now teaches writing and mentors new writing teachers at Harvard s Graduate School of Education. She led Harvard s Expository Writing Program for twenty years, directing the first-year writing program and establishing Harvard s WAC program. A two-time Braddock Award winner, Sommers is well known for her research and publications on student writing. I don't like how it uses tons of jargon constantly and assumes ...

I don't like how it uses tons of jargon constantly and assumes that you know it. Also I don't like how it has some many sections and subcategories with their odd numbering system. From my math oriented mind I feel like the logic of the numbering of the chapters were written by grammar professors, which they were. Otherwise the book is good though.

I had to buy this as part of a required text book for one of my college courses and I have referred to it quite often throughout my college years. Very clear cut and has both ELA and APA writing styles. I highly recommend this as a good tool to use throughout college.

Spiral Bound Copy

I was expecting a paper back with a normal spine, but this is actually a spiral bound book. I consider the spiral bound much easier to use because it takes up less desk space. :) The layout Diana Hacker chose to use is useful, but I've found some issues in finding specific material for citing sources using the index to navigate the book. Once I did find the correct information, it was of understandable quality.

Negatives: Challenging (But not impossible) to find specific information within a section.

One of a kind book.

This book is very good for teaching child care providers whose first language is not English the basics to communicate at their job. It reviews everything from the set up of the room to infants/toddler/older children to emergencies/accidents to writing notes to parents to cultural norms in child care in the US. As the book states, it is for advanced beginners/lower intermediates. The woman I am using it with finds it very helpful. When it is too easy, I add extra vocabulary or phrases for her. However, the most common phrases and expressions in child care are used and explained, and the book covers some basic grammar.
