Not even good for an introduction

Much of the book is clearly just a rephrase of specific pages of Microsoft's MSDN library which you can get free online. The diagrams, tables, content and order of the paragraphs of the book section closely match the MSDN pages with the exception that much of the critical information is left out. In many instances it is clear that the authors - and I use the term authors loosely - did not understand what they were reading on MSDN while "writing" the chapter and therefore the re-write is inaccurate. For instance, the following quote is the authors' description of the ADO.Net Persist Security Info property:
"Specifies whether sensitive security information is to be resent if a connection is reopened."
Are these people just making it up as they go along, or what? If you know anything about ADO or ADO.Net then you know that Persist Security Info only refers to whether you can, in code, retrieve the password information from the connection string of an open connection. Regardless of how Persist Security Info is set, the password is available for opening or reopening the connection.
Wait! Maybe this book was intended to be a work of fiction about C#! It's just listed in the wrong section! That would explain the authors just making it up as they went along.
As for being All-in-One, I would call it None-in-One. Many key sections of the book are incomplete and don't tell you that they're incomplete. Other sections are incomplete and tell you to read MSDN for more information. I thought that was what I bought the book for...so I wouldn't have to read the tens of thousands of pages of MSDN.
I have to wonder if the authors have ever written a C# program in Visual Studio. My guess is probably not. This is a quote from the book:
"Notice in the code generated by the Windows Forms Designer that a call to the method InitializeComponent() is made in the constructor of the form. You can then place any of your initialization code in the InitializeComponent() method."
There is no way that the authors have ever successfully done that - added initialization code in the InitializeComponent() method. Anyone who has ever written a C# program in Visual Studio.Net knows that the code in the InitializeComponent method is created by the designer and any changes you make there will be lost as soon as you make a change in the designer.
This is the second (and last) McGraw Hill/Osborne All-in-One book I have purchased. I bought a CCIE edition several years ago. It was as error-filled as this one. Many of us who have been around a long time remember when Adam Osborne was a cultural icon. It's disappointing that the books that now bear his name are not of the same caliber as the books of yesteryear.
But I am being too harsh. I should be sensitive and understanding. The authors are undoubtedly ridden with guilt over having caused hundreds or thousands of unsuspecting buyers to spend money on this book and then waste $125 each taking, and failing miserably, the Microsoft certification exams. That guilt, combined with the shame and embarrassment they feel for having created the lowest rated certification book on the topic, should be punishment enough. I should be reaching out to them, feeling their pain...

Basic Introduction - Riddled with Errors

Errors Errors Everywhere... The book is a descent high level introduction to the material, but thats where it stops. As many have stated before and I will state again, the book is riddled with mistakes and it seems that McGraw Hill gave up on the errata sheet after only 14 pages (about 50 pages short).
If your just looking for an intro to this material, and this book is cheap enough, I suppose it'll do. I would be remiss however if I did not say that there is NO WAY this book alone could get you throught the exams. It just doesn't have anywhere near the necessary depth of information needed for the MS Certs.

Good introduction but disappointing

The book provides a good introduction for someone who is new to the .NET Framework and C# .NET, but falls far short as a test preparation tool. It doesn't go into near enough depth in several areas. It's a good starting point, but if you are serious about want to pass the exams, I would suggest looking at books that focus on each of the exams individually, such as the Microsoft Press self study series.
The biggest failing is that the book gives the reader the raw facts, but doesn't provide directed hands-on practice. You need to know the information, but also how to apply it in practical situations.

Ascherbrock & Pack, 2008, S. 7-9). Der Karateverband hat beispielsweise in dem Schulprojekt „Sound Karate“ in den letzten Jahren ebenfalls dem Unterrichtsalltag im Sport durch den Bereich „Einsatz von neuen Ger�ten“ und den daraus resultierenden neuen methodische M�glichkeiten innovierende Impulse gesetzt (vgl. Br�nig, 2007). Auch aus der Sportart Taekwondo, welche seit 2000 olympisch ist, wurde eine aus dem bestreben nach mehr Mitgliedern eine Schulsportkonzeption entwickelt. In den Richtlinien der Sekundarstufe II wird die Sportart Taekwondo in diesem Bewegungsfeld sogar schon als Zweikampfform ohne direkten K�rperkontakt erw�hnt. Es stellt sich die Frage: „Was haben unsere Sch�lerinnen1 und Sch�ler davon?“

Larry E. Dyer (Th.M., Dallas Theological Seminary; D.Min., Covenant Theological Seminary) has been a pastor for over twenty years. He served in Wisconsin and Illinois before becoming senior pastor at Chapel of the Lake, St. Louis, Missouri. He has taught extension courses through Brookes Bible Institute in St. Louis and Calvary Bible College in Kansas City, Missouri.

Excellent source

Dr. Dyer has done the church a service by publishing this fine little volume on baptism. He explains, in simple language, what baptism means and why the believer should be baptized. Along the way, he explains the mode of baptism and some helpful hints for both the one being baptized and the baptizer. This is an excellent book to hand to candidates for baptism to explain clearly this important doctrine.
For the more technical minded, the author deals with a number of issues that have divided the church:
1. He defends the immersion mode of baptism.
2. He rejects infant baptism, promoting only believer's baptism
3. He explains the true meaning of the major passages used to support baptismal regeneration.
My only disagreement with Dyer would be in his understanding of modern day Lutheran theology being in opposition with Martin Luther's view (p.33). Unfortunately, Luther, who did teach that salvation was on the basis of grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, never broke from infant baptism as a component of salvation. The contradiction lies with Luther himself, who believed so strongly in sola fide while still subscribing to baptismal regeneration (see Luther's Shorter Catechism), not with Luther and Lutheran theology.
Baptism, the Believer's First Obedience is an excellent tool that I will use on a regular basis with those interested in baptism.

A Helpful, Scriptural Book on Believer's Baptism

Books on infant baptism are common. Ones on the baptism of believers by immersion are harder to find. Dyer's book falls into the latter category. Those who have serious questions about what the Bible has to say about baptism will value Dyer's helpful book. Without becoming excessively technical, Dyer, a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary, answers common questions about baptism in sufficient depth to satisfy most readers. He tackles different uses of the word "baptism" in the Bible, answers common objections to baptism, and has helpful and practical hints to offer those participating in a baptism. Readers will appreciate his willingness to discuss opposing views and to analyze some of the harder verses in the Bible that are related to the subject.

Baptism Important But Not Necessary?

Dr. Dyer's book on baptism is a good book, if you hold that baptism is a mere ceremony in the life of the believer. I found the book to be simple to read and Dr. Dyer deals with the mode, subjects, and purpose of baptism quite well.
My only problems with this book was Dr. Dyer's insistence that while baptism should be the believers first act of obedience to Christ, he never tells us why. He defends believers' baptism but then attacks baptismal regeneration by insisting that a believer need not be baptized to be saved yet if they truly are saved, writes Dyer, then they will be baptized. This is confusing to me since the NT knows nothing of an unbaptized Christian, which Dyer would agree with, but then he claims you can still be a Christian without baptism.
I do recommend this book but I do also recommend that you read this with your Bible open and ready to test all things by the inspired Scriptures (1 Thess. 5:21).

A Complete and Concise Account

Michael Benedict does an adequate job of providing a complete and concise history of Constitutional history in the United States. Many books on this subject lose their effitiveness because they are filled with legalese. However, Benedict has assembled a book that allows the collegiate reader or anyone interested in history to understand the complex principles that have developed Constitutional principles. He covers topics from Revolutionary Crises, the Civil War, Reconstruction, Trust Busting, The Depression, and many more. This is a book for people interested in the Constitutional Crises and Legislation that has effected the development of the United States we know today.

Well written and comprehensive, but unfortunately with a decided leftwing bias. On virtually every page, the author's political bent is predicted and observed.

Indeed, Mr. Bennett will not challenge this assessment because he knows it's accurate.

Solid Introduction, with Fine Bibliography

This book offers a solid introduction to various aspects of the history of the U.S. Constitution --including its origins, its formation, and its interpretation by the Supreme Court over the past 200-plus years. While it has the feel of a college textbook, I think the book deserves a broader audience. In very clear, if unadorned writing, Benedict covers important cases decided by the Supreme Court, and describes the evolution of judicial doctrine regarding the Bill of Rights, the Fourteenth Amendment, and other provisions of the Constitution. Unlike most books about constitutional history, this one has the added virtue of attempting to relate jurisprudential developments to the broader historical context in which they occurred. Benedict does not try too hard to conceal his own preferences regarding certain decisions of the Court. For example, it is apparent that he is generally supportive of the Warren Court revolution in criminal procedure and other areas of constitutional law, and is opposed to some of the retrenchment that has occurred in the Rehnquist Court. At the same time, Benedict seems to take pains to include citations to legal or historical scholars with whom he disagrees in the excellent bibliographic essays that appear at the end of each chapter of the book. I view this book as a very good reference and as a stimulus to further reading (including Benedict's own book about the Johnson impeachment, which Judge Richard Posner cited in his book regarding the Clinton impeachment).

Historical Perspective

I am a Lean Practioner and 6 Sigma Black Belt. The advertisement for the book lead me to beleive that it was something different. I enjoyed and learned from the book.

What the book was to me is a personal history of the introduction of lean to the US. Mr. Bodek was a key and instrumental force in doing so. From that perspective the book fills in a lot of gaps of how things happened and who played what role. The book also gives a great overview of what Lean (Toyota Production System, TPS) is and how it is applied, and who the key players were/are and an insight to their personalities.

The book is not a detailed examination of the production system. If you are looking for that, Mr. Bodek gives references to other books published by his company translated from the original Japanese. This gives you insight to those works and which to chose from. This, in and of itself, is worth the price of this book.

The book does cover the major topics of the TPS and gives plenty of examples and implementation stories. The stories are great in themsleves, and a great insight to the way of Japanese management. Mr. Bodek is a strong proponent of that style. It also goes into some biographies of the key players in the process. It hits on Demings' and Juran's impact in Japan.

The war stories of the industrial touring trips to Japan were interesting. The problems faced by jumping in to the publishing opportunities to present the original works to a new audience were facinating business stories.

The biggest AHA moment for me was the discussion on Quick and Easy Kaizen, or the Japanese implementation of a sugggestion system. Radically different from any I've seen in the US outside of Honda and Toyota.

If your looking for a fast easy read on the history of bringing Lean to the US and the key underpinnings of the process to include a good description of the key components with annecdotes, this is the book for you. If your looking to understand lean and find other references of use to you, this is the book for you. If your insterested in filling in some knowledge gaps of how and why some things happened, again, this is for you. If your looking for specific action items to implement specific components, go elsewhere, or use this book as a guide.

Kaikaku (Norman Bodek) Lean Manufacturing made simple

Norman Bodek is a master and genius when it comes to sharing information about Lean Manufacturing. I just finished reading Kaikaku and must praise and congratulate Norman for his vision to have seen the potential in Japan and the people in Toyota all those years ago. Norman truly is an inspiration and unsung hero of modern manufacturing and this book shares some great personal experiences with the original creators of Lean in Japan such as Ohno and Shingo, to name just two.
This account of his experiences and the wisdom shared within the book (Kaikaku) will benefit the many people and companies who are attempting to get to grips with the lean tranformation process all over the world. This book has unveiled many of the mysteries surrounding the original creators of Lean and shows how basic common sense and simple thinking by everyone can create miraclulous results in any company.
May those who seek the truth and simplicity of the Toyota Production System be inspired with the knowledge shared in this marvelous book.
