Merchants of Doubt tells the story of how a loose-knit group of high-level scientists and scientific advisers, with deep connections in politics and industry, ran effective campaigns to mislead the public and deny well-established scientific knowledge over four decades. Remarkably, the same individuals surface repeatedly―some of the same figures who have claimed that the science of global warming is "not settled" denied the truth of studies linking smoking to lung cancer, coal smoke to acid rain, and CFCs to the ozone hole. "Doubt is our product," wrote one tobacco executive. These "experts" supplied it.
Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway, historians of science, roll back the rug on this dark corner of the American scientific community, showing how ideology and corporate interests, aided by a too-compliant media, have skewed public understanding of some of the most pressing issues of our era.

The people the authors accuse in this carefully documented book are themselves scientists—mostly physicists, former cold warriors who now serve a conservative agenda, and vested interests like the tobacco industry. The authors name these scientists—all with powerful connections in government and the media—including Robert Jastrow, Frederick Seitz, and S. Fred Singer. Seven compelling chapters detail seven issues (acid rain, the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke, the ozone hole, global warming, the Strategic Defense Initiative, and the banning of DDT) in which this group aimed to sow seeds of public doubt on matters of settled science. They did so by casting aspersions on the science and the scientists who produce it. Oreskes, a professor of history and science studies at UC–San Diego, and science writer Conway also emphasize how journalists and Internet bloggers uncritically repeat these charges. About the Author
Naomi Oreskes is Professor of History and Science Studies at the University of California, San Diego. Her essay "Beyond the Ivory Tower" was a milestone in the fight against global warming denial. Erik Conway is the resident historian at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Fighting Facts is their first book together.

A great skeptical history and criticism of 1900s popular science environmental & health controversies

Merchants of Doubt does a great job summarizing the history of and illustrating the connections between recent mass-media environmental and health science controversies. The book adds depth to common public perception of scientific activity, and subtly builds a narrative of sympathy for the people who must make decisions based on the lop-sided handling of scientific topics in mass media formats.
The book can be heavy handed in targeting specific people, and some of the impassioned arguments are blatantly fallacious, often using the same rhetorical strategies that the book attempts to criticize, but these quibbles do not detract from the general appeal and quality of the book as a source for encouraging development of healthy skepticism of popular science, and highlighting the importance for being able to have trustworthy sources of scientific consensus and authority.
It's unfortunate that there are many political references, albeit many of those necessitated by the factual history of events. Without these political overtones, the generally good information in this book might appeal to many Republicans and other right-aligned people whose egotistical, cultural, social, or other influences might prevent them from allowing the great amount of data and facts to inform their decisions.
I highly recommend this book in general, but especially for any of those right-leaning individuals who are adventurousness enough to venture outside the echo chamber of mass media support groups. I'm a pretty independent person, politically, but have a fair amount of respect for many Libertarian ideals, and I can say that this book isn't going to insult your intelligence, though it may provide an alternative perspective that has quite a bit of scientific and historical research to support itself.

Take the Red Pill and welcome to harsh reality.

This is one of the most troubling books I have ever read. When you are done reading a scary horror tale or a dystopian novel you have the luxury of knowing that it was all fiction. You do not have that luxury after reading "Merchants of Doubt." Once you have peeked behind the curtain and seen how easily public opinion has been manipulated on so many seemingly disparate issues by the same small group of people it is impossible to watch the news without seeing the very same techniques being used on a daily basis. Now I know how Neo felt after taking the Red Pill.
This should be a must read for all students when they learn about how our government works - or doesn't work.

this is an excellent book, except for the chapter on DDT

this is an excellent book, except for the chapter on DDT, where in all honesty the hype preceded the science. But, in spite of this fault, the rest of the book is so good, that it deserves a 5 star. Do not listen to all the people who want to deny what are obvious scientific truths including Global Warming. I understand why the Tobacco Companies would deny the harmful effect of smoking, the power company the harmful effect of sulfur emission and the oil companies the obvious truth of Global Warming. I can even understand why corrupt politicians go along. But the psychopathic ideologues who mix science and politics belong in an insane asylum.
