Jillette (the Penn of Penn & Teller) and his pseudonymous poker-cheating guru, Dickie, begin by saying that anyone who loves playing poker should "throw this book away." Readers will find no better advice. The dubious premise is that Dickie took Penn under his wing when Penn was 18, and as a favor, he has agreed to publish the card sharp's book. But calling the wit and wisdom of Dickie Richard sophomoric is far too kind. More accurate descriptions would be amoral ("Morality is what you make of it"), , scabrous and without redeeming social value. And the book is marred by obscenities, class insults and a machismo that would be comical if it weren't so vulgar ("If you are going to cheat, whip out your prick and cheat like a man"). If this was meant to be a joke, it's not funny. And if it's meant seriously, then the book itself is a cheat: when you're done with it, you still won't really know how to cheat at poker. (Oct. 5)

About the Author
Penn Jillette has been the larger, louder half of the performing team Penn & Teller since 1975. He is the author of the novel SOCK and, with Teller, the bestselling author of CRUEL TRICKS FOR DEAR FRIENDS and HOW TO PLAY IN TRAFFIC. Mickey D. Lynn is a writer and poker expert. He has written for television, worked in the film industry, and worked with the talent department of Celebrity Poker Showdown, but no cheating happened there. Really. Both authors live in Las Vegas.

hilarious and insightful

This is a hilarious book. As Penn Jillette explains at the beginning, Penn (ostensibly) met Dickie Richard when Penn was hitchhiking as a teenager, and Dickie taught Penn everything Dickie knew about how to cheat at cards. Penn himself isn't a card cheat, doesn't condone card cheating, and feels bad about publishing this book. But Penn owed Dickie a favor, and Dickie wanted his memoirs published, so Penn agreed. The memoirs were horribly written so Penn and his co-author rewrote them. The bulk of the book, then, is a first-person narrative from Dickie about how he cheats at poker.

Dickie explains that you could cheat in a casino, but it's too hard. Instead Dickie shows up in a town, makes "friends", and then plays poker with them, takes their money, and skips town. Dickie cheats any way he can -- from bottom dealing to marking cards to simply walking out the door with the cash box. Dickie's descriptions of what he does are amusing yet appalling -- he is a sociopath and an egomaniac, and yet he manages to be so entertaining, you can't help liking him (a bit).

Is Dickie a real person? I highly doubt it. As Penn tells us at the beginning, Dickie is a "fictional" character -- that's a big clue that you shouldn't take the narrative veridically. Does this book teach you how to cheat at poker? Kind of. It doesn't actually teach you how to bottom deal, for example, but Dickie correctly says that you can learn that from any standard magic book. It doesn't teach you a system to follow for marking cards, but Dickie correctly says that you wouldn't want to follow a standard system, since that would make your cheating easier to detect.

As I see it, the point of this book isn't to teach you how to cheat -- though you might learn about how to detect cheaters (even though Dickie insists that's not a goal of the book). The book is a novel about a card cheater. Dickie epitomises an amoral, larger-than-life showman who lives life to its fullest. I get the sense that Dickie represents a somewhat darker side of Penn. Penn manipulates cards -- and people -- to entertain others and make money. That's what being a professional magician is all about. Dickie manipulates cards and people to make money -- the entertainment comes in being able to read about it.

Disappointing and entertaining in one swoop

If you want to learn how to palm cards, uncut a deck, deal from the bottom, the second or any other part of the deck this book is not for you. In fact, in the first chapter the book cuts through those lessons by recommending you to purchase "Expert at the card table" by Erdnase to learn all those moves as "he can teach you better than I ever could.."

The book is basically stories about a card cheat and his experiences over thirty years and if it teaches anything its how to scam people for extra money when you are already an accomplished card cheat and how to find games and not get the life kicked out of you on a daily basis. Ok so after reading the book you aren't ready to go out and take on the world as a card cheat nor do you learn much more about poker. What you do get is a pretty entertaining read about the life of a card cheat and the situations they end up in. If you are looking for a factual "how to" guide then look elsewhere. If you are a poker fan and looking for an entertaining novel this is the book for you. Do I feel cheated ? Yes :) Its not what I paid for. Would I wipe the book from my memory for a refund? Probably not.

Think before buying

As a fan of Penn & Teller's other books, I was going to buy this, but in reading parts of it in a bookstore, I discovered that it's not the fun, clever, amusing book about tricks you could use to cheat at cards or even ways to have fun with your friends at a poker night.

This book is a dark and seedy account about the life of a professional (and possibly fictional) poker cheater. There's nothing wrong with that, but it wasn't the book I thought it was going to be so I wanted to post a warning to make sure you knew what you were getting.

Fun fantasy series. Clever plot. Insightful lessons.

At the time of this review, only one other person has reviewed this book. I am not sure why as I consider this 4 book series in the "classic fantasy" category. I found this series by going through this book list:

As many fantasy series go, this is about disparate group of people forced together by circumstance, but all driven to save the world in a time of war. The story is narrated mostly 3rd person, but also from first in sections. We also get to know the enemy that humanity is fighting against, but it seems as you go through the story that the war is really a plot by a shadowy overlord. This series is unique because of Irvine's tempered sexual scenes, evident love of geology, and clever page-turning twists.

If you are eager to meet a diminutive girl whom doom follows and a new species who doesn't fit in their skin and a whole other crew of driven future makers, you will have fun with this series.

Intelligence Community version of Leading Teams

Richard Hackman is one of the world's most influential team researchers. He has been researching teams for a very long time and his early work, such as Work Redesign (Prentice Hall Organizational Development Series) are true classics. His earlier Leading Teams: Setting the Stage for Great Performances is my standard recommendation for anyone who works in or with teams. So, I was very excited to get his latest work: Collaborative Intelligence.

Collaborative Intelligence is about getting teams to work in intelligence work. This is important to realize before getting this book because the book has a very domain specific focus. In a way, this book could be called "leading teams applied for intelligence teams."

The book consists of 3 different clearly distinct parts. The first part is called "The challenge and potential of teams" covers teams in general. It explains different types of teams and what the benefits and drawbacks are of each. The last chapter in this part also covers the important message that you can't make teams great but need to work on the environment in which the teams work in and hopefully grow a great team.

The second part is called "six enabling conditions" and describes six environmental conditions that when they are in place, it will be more likely that a team will succeed than when they are not in place. These six conditions are consistent with the ones presented in Richard Hackman's earlier work: Leading Teams. The six conditions are: 1) create a real team, 2) specify a clear purpose, 3) ensure the right people are in the team, 4) create working agreements, 5) create organizational support, and 6) provide proper team coaching.

The last part is called "implications for leaders and organizations" and specifically covers how to apply these ideas in intelligence teams. It is a short part with just 2 chapters covering specific challenges in intelligence work.

Collaborative Intelligence is a good book, as I would expect from Richard Hackman. Yet, I was slightly disappointed. I had hoped to get more new ideas but instead I discovered this book is mainly applying earlier concepts to the intelligence industry (which I don't work in!). Some of the lessons can be applied to other industries also, so this book was still useful to me. Yet, if you are looking for a book purely on leading and creating teams, I'd still recommend Richard Hackman's earlier work: Leading Teams: Setting the Stage for Great Performances. If you specifically work in the intelligence industry, then this book is perfect!

Can intelligence work help us all?

I'm trying to put up a team for an important European Project and at the same time I work in one. When I started reading the book, I thought "Oh, got the wrong one!" Instead, slowly proceeding I found Hackman's book very interesting. Not only because making us dive in the middle of the stream, an absolutely unknown stream (who ever thought of reading something on intelligence teams!), he knows how to sum up previous knowledge and scientific observations on teamwork in a clear manner, but also because many of the reported observations are absolutely applicable to anykind of team work.
The core message of the book are the six conditions to have a team succeed, that are progressively analyzed in different chapters and that I think must be kept in mind when putting up the organization. Another key issue that the Author identifies with great attention is what the teamleader should do. The importance of setting the right conditions and choosing people with different backrounds is stressed and also the relatively new concept of a limited leadership intervention during teamwork. I come from an Italian/European culture (not German!) and the respect of norms is not our cup of tea, in that we usually find then more limiting than useful. However, the part on normative identifications before starting teamwork deserves an extra thought, especially for how the Author states that norms should be agreed upon and not imposed.
The book is dense with information and deserves a second reading and eventhough specific for the discipline it tackles is useful for many situations.
By the way look at "Zero Dark Thirty" and you will find many of the topics and behaviours the Hackman talks about.

Team Playing-Team Fighting

Collaborative Intelligence is a hands-on, on the job training on team work. Team work is something that used to be as American as Apple Pie and Hot Dogs! Nowadays the only teams that America knows are professional sports teams. Not anymore, Collaborative Intelligence gives us a peak to the inner workings of America's Intelligence Community elite Teams designed to protect us from foreign and or domestic enemies.

The same knowledge that can be transferred to any business team in any economic sector and that is what J. Richard Hackman, the author, did with this book.

The book is segmented in three parts. The first part, "Teams Intelligence" is which teams work and which do not. The second part is "The Six Enabling Conditions" tells you what is needed for a team to properly function. The third and final part "Implications for Leaders and Organizations" gives you the cost of a badly formed or managed team and the gain of a good formed team and manage team. One final aspect discussed on the Book is the 60-30-10 rule that is essential for team management.
The book is well written and very fluid. Lots of information and no fooling around!

However, when this experiment ends, one thing is clear: the nightmare has only just begun.

Part 1 explains how the political prisoners were recruited from the POW camp.

Part 2 is told from the POV of an experimentee with interspersed reports from the lead scientist. The major action of the original tale is fleshed out and occurs in real time. The novella delves into the mind of the prisoners from inside the cage of the experiment.

Part 3 is told from the POV of a scientist involved in the experiment. He continues the story after the experiment has concluded. The consequences of the experiment are played out among the isolated log cabins of rural Siberia.

This volume features iIllustrations by award-winning graphic artist Daniel Tyka.

A Well-Developed Version of the Classic Creepypasta Story

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

If you're a fan of creepypasta, horror tales that you can find floating around the Internet, you've probably read The Russian Sleep Experiment. The basic premise of the story is that a small group of Russian prisoners are promised to have their sentences lifted if they take part in the eponymous experiment. This task consists of placing the prisoners in a sealed room with a gas that is meant to keep them from sleeping. But as you can imagine, things go horrifically wrong...

Ice's novella succeeds in developing this premise and expanding short story into a better tale. The story provides characterization for both the prisoners and the authorities running the experiment, providing more emotional weight for the reader when the experiment does go awfully awry with increasingly horrific consequences. It's been awhile since I read the original story, but from what I can remember this novella tweaks and expands the horror that this experiment unleashed. All in all an enjoyable novella and a quick read for fans of horror, dark fiction, and creepypasta.

Unique Fast Phased Approach-Enjoyed in One Sitting!

The Russian Sleep Experiment Horror Novella by Holly Ice is an interesting composition which made me enjoy in my leisure time. The book is woven as three different parts and I must say that this is a unique compilation. The author uses a simple and easily understandable language to every one. It makes the reader visualize the events being described by the author. The flow through dialogues make it a more interesting read.

The story is based on a legend about sleep experiments on Russian prisoners. This happens in a prison in Siberia. The prisoners are bound to a long period of prison time where they have to experience hard labor as well. The prisoners are experimented on sleep using gas. This book is a fast phased quick read as well. There are pictures added time to time in order to convey the image and the surrounding to reader's mind and the added illustrations are very appropriate as well. The log book records added provides a wonderful approach and I really like this. The creepy horror sense in its flow will make any reader feel the depth and sense the nature of this book and entertain him. Recommended reading for every one!

An fresh approach to a well-known story

At first I was skeptical when I stumbled upon this title. This is a short novella and I was able finish it in 3 sittings. The writing is interesting and at times immersive,but I do think some further work could have gone into expending the plot a bit more.Specifically, I feel that various parts of the plot could have been described in more 'detail'. That being said, reading this was fun and the approach taken to portray this classic story is unique. It's good to see a young author confront such a widely-known and notorious topic. The illustrations are really nice to look at and add to the overall atmosphere of the writing. This is a good weekend read, especially for fans of the story.
