Book great, took awhile

Book is in great shape. It just took longer than I'd hoped to arrive. It did arrive in the estimated arrival time, though, just not at he beginning of the range given. I'd say 4 1/2 stars, but couldn't see how to do the half star on my device.

"Local government in colonial America was the seedbed of American constitutionalism." So begins the introductory essay to this landmark collection of eighty documents created by the American colonists—and not English officials—that are the genesis of American fundamental law and constitutionalism. Most of these documents, commencing with the Agreement of the Settlers at Exeter in New Hampshire, July 5, 1639, and concluding with Joseph Galloway's Plan of Union, 1774—"the immediate precursor to the Articles of Confederation"—have never before been accessible to the general reader or available in a single volume. As Professor Lutz points out, the documents are chosen to make possible "a careful examination of [the American] people's attempt at self-interpretation." All of the principal colonial documents are included, as are all documents attempting to unite the colonies, beginning with the New England Confederation of 1643. Bicameralism, popular sovereignty, the separation of powers, checks and balances, limited government, and religious freedom—in sum, the hallmarks of American constitutionalism—were first presented to the world in these writings.

About the Author
Donald S. Lutz is a professor of political philosophy in the department of political science at the University of Houston, where he has been teaching since 1968. He received his Ph.D. from Indiana University. He is the author of eleven books, including Colonial Origins of the American Constitution: A Documentary History (1998), A Preface to American Political Theory, (1992), and The Origins of American Constitutionalism (1988), and numerous articles published in American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, Publius: The Journal of Politics, Social Science Quarterly, the Annals of Political Science and History, and Western Political Quarterly, among others.

Good foundational reading for the serious history buff

Though challenging at times to read - both because ot the period spelling and sometimes complex prose - I give this book a thumbs up for any history buff wanting to understand America in the era leading up to the revolution and establishment of the constitution.

Realize this is a compendium of documents and thus don't expect much narrative. There is some in the form of introductions to each article as well as a detailed preface-introduction; you will need to draw more from study ( and discussion if you can read with others) but nothing worthwhile is all that easy!

A Top Notch Collection Of Colonial Sources

Professor Donald S. Lutz has given us a fine contribution of historical documents from colonial America (1607-1776) with his ~Colonial Origins of the American Constitution: A Documentary History~. These documents trace the foundations of American Constitutionalism from the beginnings of the American colonies to the start of the revolutionary perion 1776.

American Constitutionalism, according to Lutz, developed out of two distinct traditions that would combine to create a uniquely American Constitutional tradition. The first developing from the top-down structure from England consisting of "charters, letters-patent," and other orders written by the English for the colonists. The second tradition, and the focus of this collection was the set of rules; covenants, compacts, ordinances, codes, etc. written by the colonists themselves that helped spur the movement towards the development of American Constitutionalism. This second tradition and its development did not originate in the outgrowth of 1776 revolution, but was a constant evolution spanning over a hundred years (1607-1776) and Lutz proved this to be the case in the documents provided (only a small sampling, but according to Lutz valuable collection).

As another reviewer indicated, the introductory essay by Lutz is a "valuable piece of work" in of itself. There is a good amount of information about the use of language contained in the essay provided by Lutz. He does a good job at explaining/defining various terms like; covenant, compact, constitution, charter, etc. and how those words were used and sometimes interchangeable. The way Lutz analyzed the language during the period in his essay is essential for anyone to understand in context the subsequent documents and I can't place more emphasis on reading/understanding his introductory essay for those who are not familiar with the period and the language used.

Overall, this is an exceptional and well organized collection (state by state ending with confederations) of important documents regarding the colonial origins of American Constitutionalism. The book ends with a fine bibliography for those who want to further explore more documents of our colonial past and its influence on American Constitutionalism. As another reviewer stated the only downside is a lack of an index, but still an excellent source.

Critical documentary and analytical source

The American Constitution did not spring fully formed, Athena-like, from James Madison's fevered brow. It was the product of many men's ideas and experiences. It was also a link in a long chain of efforts by the political communities of North America to put down on parchment the proper relationship between government and citizen. In showing (to change the metaphor) the family tree of the U.S. Constitution, this book is an invaluable documentary resource for anyone attempting to understand the origins and meaning of our system's central document.
From the 'Articles, Laws, and Orders, Divine, Politic, and Martial for the Colony in Virginia' (1610) and the Mayflower Compact (1620), through to the Articles of Confederation (1777), Donald Lutz has assembled an impressive documentary history. But his intention isn't simply to catalogue old contracts. As he notes in his Preface, Lutz's goal is to show how the early Americans thought of themselves, how they began to knit themselves together as a people, and how certain critical concepts -- popular sovereignty, rule of law, a virtuous society -- were adopted as 'symbols' of an emerging American consciousness. In this regard, the 'Introductory Essay' is itself a valuable piece of work.
Both as an analysis and a collection of primary documents, this book deserves to be near at hand to any student of American constitutional history and practice.

extensive and non-biased study

Stuart E. Prall's "The Bloodless Revolution" is an extensive and non-biased study of the seminal constitutional developments in 17th century England; which defined the constitutional monarchy in Britain in the age when absolutism reigned supreme elsewhere in the world. Author prepares the scene for the revolution by explaining relationship between king and the Parliament throughout Stuart dynasty starting from James I, thought Long Parliament, Civil War, Protectorate, Restoration, last years of Charles II, and the many encroachment on liberties and mistakes of James II which ultimately led to Glorious Revolution.
Emphasis is on developments in the legal system and relationship between multiple religious institutions and political parties during and after the Restoration period.

"The medieval and Tudor view of the dispensing power was premised on the distinction between malum prohibitum (a prohibited evil) and malum per se (an evil in itself). The distinction was essentially medieval, and the foundation was divine law and/or natural law. Restrictions considered man-made (malum prohibitum) could be dispensed with. Restrictions that were thought to have been authored by God or Nature (malum per se) were not to be dispensed with. These distinctions permeated both the secular and the ecclesiastical structures of the medieval worlds. The Tudor era, especially after the English Reformation, saw the gradual secularization of the political and legal thought and the gradual erosion of the distinction , because the whole conception of divine and natural law was one of the victims of the new age of science and its concomitant mechanical laws of nature, which were coming to the fore in the seventeenth century. One result of the pre-1640 struggle for sovereignty and the constitutional struggle of the Puritan Revolution itself has bee the triumph of the principle that sovereign power was identical with the lawmaking, or legislative, power. Neither the Long Parliament or Protectorate felt any divine or natural limitation upon their ultimate freedom to exercise total legislative authority. The lesson of the Restoration had been that the supreme or sovereign legislative authority did exist in the English state, and that it existed in the triple-headed institution of the King-in-Parliament. The problem was very complex. Because if the king-in-Parliament can make or unmake any and all laws, then there is no longer any practical distinction between the malum prohibitum and malum per se. All laws are merely malum prohibitum. The state is supreme, not God or Nature. The result is that the king could now feel free, at least in theory, to dispense with any law, while those who might oppose his particular use of this power ... would be thrown back upon the old medieval distinction between the human and the divine. English constitutional development was to be unique in seventeen-century Europe in that these same intellectual tendencies on the Continent were indeed leading to just this justification for royal absolutism, while in England the struggle for power between the king and Parliament would continue unabated ..."

This is a stupendous book. It reveals the Glorious Revolution in its entirety. From the Restoration to the Act of Settlement, nothing is overlooked. In addition, the book is written without any of the historical or idealogical predispositions which have long plagued previous studies of this seminal revolution.

I really enjoy Morgan Hawke's writing so bought the book purely by author. Did not realize it's a very, very short story. The book came promptly and in good condition but the cost was way too much for a short story.

In writing Structured Reading, Sixth Edition, we remained convinced that students learn best from guided, hands-on experience with complete, not partial, reading selections. We believe, too, that the best approach starts with detailed instruction in the separate drills areas that assure movement to college-level reading abilities, followed by extensive, repeated practice with many complete reading selections that comprise five-sixths of this book.

In flight training, student pilots spend some instructional time in a training simulator. But within a short time, the instructors move students from the simulator to the cockpit of the airplane to give the students hands-on practice in flying the plane. Few passengers would fly with a pilot who had only simulator experience. Most want a pilot who has logged many hours of real flight time in the cockpit. Likewise, we want students to move quickly from the skills (the simulator) to actual reading (the cockpit) for extended practice. This method has worked well since the first edition of Structured Reading and is evidenced by its continued use by hundred of teachers and thousands of students in the United States and Canada.

We've consistently had our students in mind as we've talked through our revision decisions for this Sixth Edition of Structured Reading. We've learned from our reviewers and teaching colleagues that many students look for a detailed introduction to the separate college-level reading skills they need ("Central Theme and Main Ideas"; "Major Details"; "Inferences"; "Critical Thinking"; and "Reader Response"). To that end, we offer in this Sixth Edition a comprehensive, new Part One, "Skills for Reading." This fourteen-chapter part explains and demonstrates each reading skill. Another demonstration of our focus on students in Structured Reading is the topics of the thirty complete reading selections. Some students say that they avoid reading because nothing they're assigned to read interests them. While we know that such feelings derive as much from a lack of confidence in reading abilities as from specific topics, we've always strived to provide engaging topics that appeal to a diverse audience. To this end, we've replaced five reading selections with new ones on more current, absorbing issues.

Here are the major features of Structured Reading, Sixth Edition:

• NEW! Part One, "Skills for Reading" explains the reading process. Using an FAQ approach, it gives students down-to-earth advice—with lots of chances for practice—about how to improve reading speed, expand vocabulary, make useful predictions during reading, read "on, between, and beyond" the lines, find central themes and main ideas, identify major and minor details, make inferences, read critically, and respond to ideas.
• Thirty reading selections, with five new for this edition, represent our desire to offer an instructive, stimulating balance of readings from books, magazines, newspapers, and textbooks in disciplines across the curriculum. The final mix represents male and female writers, as well as writers from a variety of ethnic groups.
• Exercises are deliberately structured to promote analytic and critical reasoning. Indeed, our structured sequences of exercises following every reading selection are the key feature that teachers and students have been praising from the first edition of Structured Reading: "Vocabulary," "Central Theme and Main Ideas," "Major Details," "Inferences," "Critical Thinking" ("Fact vs. Opinion" and "The Writer's Craft"), and "Reader Response." This structured sequence demands concentrated work in reading for literal meaning, for inferential meaning, and for critical thinking. This approach, used repeatedly, leads students to internalize successfully complex reading and thinking skills.
• The answer options for our structured exercises may look to some like multiple-choice items, but the similarity stops there. Structured Reading exercises are unique, which can be seen as soon as anyone looks beneath the surface. We've written the incorrect answers (called "distracters") to propel students into close reading and active analysis. They're forced to marshal their higher-order reasoning powers to think through mental challenges. • Complete, authentic dictionary entries accompany each reading selection to help students tackle the more difficult words in the piece. Our Appendix, "Guide to Dictionary Use," helps students—in plain English—retrieve information from dictionary entries.
• The book has six parts. Part One teaches the reading process and its college-level skills. Parts Two through Six contain reading selections with increasingly difficult readability levels (see the Instructor's Edition of Structured Reading), and with short-to-longer selections within each part.
• "Thinking: Getting Started" sections, another unique feature of Structured Reading, open Parts Two through Six to help students engage in predictive reading. We use posters, photographs, advertisements, cartoons, and other visuals to prepare students for the topics to come.

About the Author

Edward H. Judge and John W. Langdon are professors of history at Le Moyne College, where they have team-taught for the last 20 years a two-semester world history course for first-year students as well as courses on modern global history for upper-level students. Judge earned his doctorate at the University of Michigan and spent a year in the USSR as an IREX scholar. He has taught at Le Moyne since 1978, was the college's scholar of the year in 1994 and was awarded the J. C. Georg Endowed Professorship in 1997. Langdon earned his doctorate at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Public Affairs, where he was a national defense fellow. He has taught at Le Moyne since 1971, directed its honors program and was awarded the O'Connell Distinguished Teaching Professorship in 1996. Each has been named the college's teacher of the year and has chaired its department of history. They have written or edited eight books: three in collaboration with each other, three as individuals and two in collaboration with other scholars. They love teaching world history, especially to students of diverse backgrounds and interests, and they derive great joy from infecting their students with a passion and enthusiasm for the study of the human past.

Needed for school

I needed this book for school but didn't want to pay school price so I went to amazon and found this! What I didn't like about the book itself is that some of the information is confusing because some of the details are so subtle. You really have to read between the lines. I still recommend buying this book if you need it for class though. Even though the shipping is fast I don't recommend buying it at the last minute.

Honestly, I did not care for this textbook. I felt as though they jumped around too much. I am used to having key words with definitions on the side. It did read as more of a "book" which was nice. But i missed the traditional things an actual textbook brings.

His bike-radio sends reports back to a student-run radio station, which relays that signal to Radio Payu’mat’s 2,000-watt transmitter. As a result, a much larger audience suddenly has access to an event typically ignored by Colombia’s commercial media.

Unfolding against a backdrop of corporate globalization, militarization, and a racist media and political system, Murillo documents a community’s resistance to a long history of undemocratic media that has deliberately excluded marginalized voices from the national airwaves. They have a hammerlock on commerce in nearly every country of the Pacific Rim. Seagrave, the son of missionary parents, has written numerous books about the Far East, including Dragon Lady (LJ 3/15/92). He believes that today 55 million expatriate Chinese dominate the economy of the Pacific Rim. Here he explores how these overseas Chinese came to be so powerful. Seagrave begins in the 11th century B.C.E., when merchants were exiled to the South China coast by the oppressive Chou dynasty. They then moved offshore, establishing economic power bases. Seagrave describes how over the centuries the overseas Chinese became incredibly rich. He discusses many contemporary issues, including their financing of the economic boom in China, how they achieved an edge on Western companies, and how even the Japanese cannot do business without their assistance. I have read this one twice and bought several copies to give to those who have an interest in China. Worth the read. Full history of China. Written by a British diplomat who grew up in China. Highly recommended. An Englishman gave me my first copy.
