Okay *but* these are *not* the classic forms in certain cases

First, I know that there have been complaints about the size of the photos, but I believe that they are big enough for most people with average vision. Second, I want to be very clear that the title of the book is grossly misleading. These are not, in fact, the Okinawan forms of the kata, nor are they the 'classic' forms. I lived in Okinawa growing up and have been studying several forms of Okinawan and Chinese martial arts for over twenty years and I can tell you that many of these are not the classic form, nor are they in the Okinawan style.

As Kousaku Yokota states in "Shotokan Mysteries", kokutsu dachi is not an Okinawan stance -- it was created (particularly as presented in the book) by Funakoshi Gichin well into Gichin's stay in Japan. Chatan Yara no Kushanku, as traditionally taught in Japan, makes use of neko ashi dachi where the author and images suggest kokutsu dachi; it is the styles that are based on (or have been influenced by) Gichin's modifications that use kokutsu dachi. I was actually fairly saddened to see that other Shotokan changes made their way into the katas within this book. That isn't to say that the way Shotokan influenced schools do the kata is 'wrong', simply that you cannot use the words 'Classic Kata of Shorinji Ryu: Okinawan Karate Forms' and use the forms that are more Japanese in nature (or were created to kowtow to Kanō Jigorō, because neko ashi dachi allows you to easily prevent a Judoka from grabbing you).

I give the book a 3 instead of 2 or 1 because the katas are right (just not 'classic' or 'Okinawan' in form), the pictures are good, the directions are good, and the content is good (if you don't spend your whole time hung up on the content violating the title). I believe in some latitude in kata for personal understanding or expression because as we develop we learn things, and am also a big fan of the mantra that we are all students. The book is fine if you want to do these kata in a fashion similar to the Shotokan (and it's descendents) techniques, but not if you want to actually do the kata as they are performed in Okinawa or as they traditionally were.

For anyone wanting to try to make these more Okinawan/traditional... Kokutsu dachi are peppered throughout the kata presented in the book and should almost always be neko ashi dachi. The chudan shuto uke would almost always be gedan, not chudan. Yoko geri keage are often mae geri, but in these kata (which are more advanced kata, so as the author says, you have to already know a version of them to make much use of the book because they were to teach extremely important and difficult techniques that you can't see in the book... like Chatan Yara no Kushanku, which teaches, among other things, the proper method for body shifting) it's not a hard and fast rule -- you just have to know the originals because there are yoko geris in some of the right places and in others it should be mae geri. In some cases the kata diverge greatly from the classic versions, acting as a blend between the flashy (but less practical) "competition" versions that you see and the classic version (with entire fragments added and subtracted)... you just have to know the classic kata from Okinawa to know when and where this happens (too many instances to enumerate them here). The general structure is there, but his teacher (Richard Kim) was a member of the DNBK, which explains why these are Japanese versions of the kata. It was a let-down for me because I was hoping for something that had written instruction with pictures that I could show to students who were trying to learn the kata -- they would practice with me, then have reference material for while they were practising at home... but this is not that because these are not the original forms or even Okinawan in nature.

What a great Okinawan Karate book!

This is the first Classic Karate 'Kata' book about master Richard Kim's Okinawan Karate forms. His Shorinji-ryu style is still unknown in Japan. Leroy Rodrigues is one of Mr. Kim's old student who studied under Mr. Kim in 60's in San Francisco. In historically and in technically, this is a great Okinawan Karate book for all martial artists.

French and Spanish settlers, Africans and Native Americans, as well as immigrants from Germany, Ireland, Italy, and other parts of the world all participated in creating this community's unique public and private landscapes. Places such as Congo Square, Audubon Park, the river levees, and "neutral grounds" -- local residents' own term for medians -- together with ordinary residential gardens are all testaments to the city's international imprint.

Douglas identifies five types of public and private designed landscapes in New Orleans: squares, linear open spaces, urban parks, commercial pleasure gardens, and domestic gardens. Discussing their design, function, and content, he shows how specific examples of each contribute to the city's unique character and also fit within the larger context of American landscape design history. Each type has its own complexion and reflects the influence of those who occupied it. Though New Orleanians lived in strata according to language, cultural identity, economics, and race, they found common ground, literally, in their community's landscapes.

Douglas's sweeping study, illustrated with over 90 color and black-and-white images, includes an exploration of archival horticultural books, almanacs, and periodicals; information about laborers who actually built landscapes; details of horticultural commerce, services, and marketing materials; and an exhaustive inventory of plants grown in New Orleans for agricultural, medicinal, and ornamental uses.

Review of "Public Spaces, Private Gardens"

This book has been sorely needed for decades. Lake Douglas has integrated garden design and horticulture in a carefully researched and written book.
For those of us interested in plants used in the early gardens of Louisiana, the book is especially welcomed. What a labor of love, thank you and kudos to
the author.

A Very Thorough Study!

It is a daunting study - very thorough. The book demands that readers have good eyesight because the print is of necessity very small to fit all that research into one book. The photos are also very small and do not show the lushness of our tropical materials. I love the inclusion of gardening and plant choice - New Orleans, Louisiana, is such a different area for growing compared with other portions of the United States. "Public Spaces" is exceedingly detailed and thus requires concentration to read and absorb.

About the Author
Amy Newman specializes in business communication at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. As a senior lecturer, she teaches two required communication courses: a freshman business writing and oral communication class and an upper-level persuasive communication class. Newman also teaches a graduate-level management communication course and an elective, Corporate Communication, which focuses on communication strategy, crisis communication, and social media. Newman served an adjunct instructor at Ithaca College; Milano, The New School for Management and Urban Policy in New York City; and eCornell, where she taught classes online. She has won several awards for excellence in teaching and student advising and grants to develop technology-based learning solutions. Prior to joining Cornell, Newman spent 20 years working for large companies, such as Canon, Reuters, Scholastic, and MCI. Internally, she held senior-level management positions in human resources and leadership development. As an external consultant, she worked to improve communication and employee performance in hospitality, technology, education, publishing, financial services, and entertainment companies. Easy to Use

This textbook is very readable and informative. The layout is easy to follow. For example, learning objectives appearing at the beginning of each chapter and are reprinted in margins through chapter as relevant information is presented. The authors included visual aids like charts and photos that highlight key points. There are real world examples and application questions that helped me develop a deeper understanding and recall concepts later. It is also light weight, you won't mind carrying it to class.

I have yet to work through the book, but its place in Knopp's original five-volume sequence was not apparent from Amazon's or Dover's product descriptions, so I list the entire sequence here (Dover English editions, translated from the German originals), followed by the tables of contents, which I had difficulty finding in one place:

Truly a gem of a book.

This elegant little book covers the elements of a senior or 1st year graduate course on complex analysis, although a really good mathematics program like at Berkeley may look upon it as providing some material for a junior course in advanced calculus. It is not a new book, i.e. it predates the space age and computers, but the material is timeless and fundamental. Highly recommended for those who want some exposure to a first-class style in mathematics.

A good manual for specialists

Adempiere 3.6 Cookbok is an essential but complete manual for specialists, developers, and integrators of Adempiere Open Source ERP. The book focuses exclusively on the extension and customization capabilities of Adempiere ERP software, completely leaving out the basic configuration aspects. The topics are covered in a succinct but comprehensive way, embracing several Adempiere ERP integration aspects: web services, Jasper Report, PayPal integration, Mondrian BI.
A book /manual for specialists, complete, practical and well illustrated, for professional integration of this unique ERP.

This Cookbook is an Excellent Reference

I've been implementing Adempiere and it's parent Compiere in US companies since 2004. Packt sent me an advance review copy of this book, and I consider it excellent. I would consider this Cookbook a must for any new developer or IT resource that will work with System Administration of Adempiere.

One of the most powerful aspects of Adempiere as business framework is the ability to extend and customize the application to local needs. The first 150 pages of this Cookbook cover the customization tools of the Application Dictionary that are available through the user interface. With this book as a reference, a System Admin can add Windows and fields, combo boxes with context specific content, searches and printouts.

The remainder of the Cookbook is dedicated to code extensions, such as e-commerce integrations, credit card processing, and business intelligence. While I am not a developer myself, I know that the learning curve for developers has always been steep, and having this kind of documentation along with examples is a huge head start.

Timothy J. Tobin, Ed.D, SPHR is a learning and leadership development professional with over 20 years of professional experience. Personalized Leadership Development

You know how important it is to write down your goals and how there’s tons of data to suggest it increases your chances of achieving them? This book is like that for the individual leader. I consider myself a student of leaders and leadership and, as a result, I read a lot of leadership books. I can honestly say this one was a pleasant surprise and not similar to anything I have read before. The beauty of the strategy here is that it doesn’t tell you how to be a leader. It doesn’t tell you how to change. It doesn’t provide a blueprint that may or may not be right for you (as so many books/programs do). What the author does is compel the reader to not just think about what kind of leader they want to be, but walks the reader through a series of self-reflection and learning exercises. In a clever manner the author helps the reader record this information and reflections in the book itself. Through this process the reader not only is forced to reflect on the leadership good and bad of themselves and others, but also build a roadmap that is truly personal. Who will this book benefit? In my opinion, as a seasoned leader, I would recommend to anyone from a soon-to-be leader, to an experienced one. I found the book caused me to reflect and think about my own leadership history, and ways to improve, in a manner I haven’t been compelled to in quite some time.

The only way you can lead effectively is to know your leadership story

This book is a great book for any leader who wants to lead authentically and make a difference through his/her leadership. The stories and exercises Dr. Tobin shares throughout his book make you think about how you are currently leading and gives you practical advice on how you can lead more effectively. As a leadership consultant, executive coach and trainer, I read a lot of leadership books. This book is one of the books I keep on my shelf for easy access and one of the books I recommend to my clients.

Leadership Portrait - worth a read

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this book is worth ten thousand leadership studies. As a consultant and as a faculty member who teachers working professional about organizational leadership - I can confidently say that Dr. Tobin's book offers new insight into our leadership practices. It's been a long time since a book has come along which evokes unique insights.
