About the Author
Timothy G. Stout has an M.A. in Japanese pedagogy from Columbia University and a B.A. in Japanese teaching from Brigham Young University. He is the author of Tuttle Japanese for Kids Flash Cards and More Japanese for Kids Flash Cards.

Kaori Hakone serves as a writer and an examiner for various international Japanese language exams. She has taught in both primary and secondary public and private schools and currently teaches at the American School in Japan.

Best resource I've found for learning kanji

I have been living in Japan and taking spoken Japanese lessons ~2 hours/wk for one year, and about 2 months ago decided to pick up a few books to teach myself kanji. Of the 3 that I choose, this is the hands down, #1 best choice. Between the repetitive writing of the characters, compound kanji, reading comprehension & chapter tests, and self-print flashcards that come with the book, I can now read/write over 100 kanji and even more compounds and am well on my way to mastering all 200 in the book. I am actually now searching on Amazon to find volume 2 and am disappointed it doesn't seem to exist. In summary, I could not recommend this book more to anyone who wants to master the first series of kanji.

Great for Kanji practice, but...

Before I start, I will state that I am a student and have been studying Japanese a short while. I also realize this book is first edition, but bear with me. I bought this book because I have been looking for one that teaches Kanji and shows correct stroke order. I was extremely excited when I looked inside the preview on the Amazon page, and immediately ordered it. When I got it, I was amazed. It looks even better then on this page. I took out the CD and tested out what was on it, and sure enough it has flash cards as well as all the dialogue that is in the book.

There is a big BUT with all of this. A few things I am annoyed with:

1. This book does not show direction of stroke order. For those who know how important stroke order is, this was a major turn off for me.
2. I already know the numbers in Kanji, but decided to start from the beginning anyway. I am only up to page 16 and I have noticed TWO mistakes already. If you have or get this book, I'll point them out. The first mistake is on page 11, under the "questions" section. Number one has no correct answer. However, the correct answer is a choice on the CD. The second is when practicing the Kanji for "7" on page 16. They translate the number "nanajuu" as "seven" when it is in fact, "seventy". I, of course, do not know a lot of vocabulary and am a bit nervous that there might be other mistakes in this book and therefore learn incorrectly.
3. If you use the CD, the "readings" that come with each section aren't vocalized. It would be incredibly helpful to hear the reading as opposed to well.. Just reading it. The "readings" also appear as a picture and you therefore cannot copy it to have it translated elsewhere. It's really frustrating to have sentences thrown at you with vocabulary you might not have been introduced to yet, or if you're struggling with sentence structure.

Would I recommend this book? Yes. It does show stroke order (although, not direction). What I like most about this book is that it corresponds amazingly with the Genki book. It's almost in the same learning order. I would recommend other materials in addition to this book.

My 12 year old learned a little bit it kanji in history class and loved it. I bought him this as a gift, and he has had so much fun learning to read and write kanji. I was impressed with how quickly he started picking it up.

About the Author
The writer, Margaret S. King, is an anthropologist who has studied Middle Eastern societies, both ancient and modern. Filling in the missing pieces, the writer clarifies what happened in history. In the process, the real Messiah is unveiled and an explanation is given for the events that led to the development of Christianity.

About the Author

Dr. Salvatore Piro has been part of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Institute of Technologies Applied to Cultural Heritage, ITABC-CNR) which, from early 1980, was one of the first governmental institutions worldwide to recognize the importance of geophysics in archaeological investigations. Salvatore has helped to advance the use of GPR and other geophysical techniques through the ITABC and the Ground Remote Sensing Lab he has worked at and directed since the 1980s. From the inception of this lab in early 1980s till now, his research has involved the development of acquisition, elaboration and interpretation techniques for archaeological prospection employing magnetic, earth resistance and ground penetrating radar methods. His recent research interest includes acquisition and processing of integrated geophysical methods for near surface investigations.

Dr. Dean Goodman had a unique opportunity to work at a small archaeological geophysics lab of the University of Miami Japan Division from 1989-2008. Dean had significant support from the city of Nakajima Machi, the museum at Saitobaru in Miyazaki, and the Nara National Cultural Properties Research Institute where he also was a guest researcher for many years. Since 2001, Dean had the tremendous fortune to be ‘adopted’ by the US Forest Service Heritage Program, run at that time by Dr. Kent Schneider who helped to encourage and foster continued growth of software development at the Geophysical Archaeometry Laboratory. �

A novel approach to liquidity

Nearly all economies require a need for media of exchange (i.e. fiat currency), though few monetary models are precise about the frictions that give rise to this. Nosal and Rocheteau offer a clear and thorough treatment of the "search and matching" approach to payments and liquidity, one which provides explicit microfoundations for monetary exchange.

The book is self-contained and easy to follow, while also being rigorous in its presentation. It begins by introducing the basic environment, nicely condensing pioneering works in monetary theory in the first couple of chapters. Little or no prior course-work in monetary economics is required, but a deeper understanding and appreciation of some results is enhanced with some prior exposure (knowing some basics to game theory is helpful too). I like how the intuition for key equations and results is always provided, though it might be helpful for instructors and students to have problems at the end of each chapter. The suggestions for further reading are extremely helpful for students and researchers interested in pursuing such topics in their own work.

Crucially, the book is not just about the role of currency in exchange: it also studies how assets are valued for their liquidity properties. The later chapters in fact relate assets prices to monetary factors and seek to explain famous asset pricing puzzles (e.g. the equity premium puzzle), illustrating how search theory can generate new insights that more standard theory cannot. At the same time, different notions of liquidity from the finance literature (e.g. bid-ask spreads, trading volume) is also shown to be captured quite well by the general framework (this treatment is in the last chapter which studies "over the counter" markets with pairwise matches between investors and dealers).

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to any researcher or graduate student interested in the economics of money and payments. Those interested in monetary history, game theory, market microstructure, and international trade would benefit as well.

Money, Payments, and Liquidity by Nosal and Rocheteau provides a very coherent, tractable framework that utilizes search frictions to understand the role of money and payments. The book lays out a basic microfounded environment in which money endogenously takes on a role as a medium of exchange. Nosal and Rocheteau extend the basic model to study monetary policy, the inflation-output tradeoff, liquidity, credit and asset prices.

No prior knowledge of the search and matching literature is needed to follow the book as Nosal and Rocheteau do a great job of providing intuition for the environment and key equations. At the end of each chapter is a comprehensive literature review for those interested in further research.

I highly recommend this book for those interested in monetary economics, macroeconomics and finance. This book presents the models in a simplistic, yet rigorous way making it perfect for both graduate classes and upper level undergraduate classes.

Great book!

The organization of the materials is excellent. The book gives readers enough but not overwhelming background knowledge in order to discuss more interesting and important topics. It is fun to read and also touches some pretty in-depth materials. I believe this is going to be a good reference book for first year PhD macro and a textbook for 2nd or 3rd year monetary macroeconomics. In fact, I am planning to use it in my course. Personally, I also enjoyed the book a lot while relaxing on the beach.
