Cleaned up from prior versions, not happy about having to buy each individual section

UPDATED REVIEW:
I am happy to say that I was able to pass REG on my most recent attempt. The method that definitely worked for me was to read this book along with the Ninja multiple choice questions along with those from cpareviewforfree.com. The questions had a similar feel to the Ninja MCQ and freecpareview.com compared with those that I saw in the Wiley Test Bank. By primarily using Ninja it allowed me to excel in all but one of the sections (I didn't spend too much time with that one section) as well as score above average in the multiple choice section.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
If you're studying for the CPA and don't want to pay the high cost of the review courses then this is the way to go. Tax law changes to this edition compared with an earlier edition (2013-2014) is minor such as the inclusion of the Section 179 changes for 2015 from 200K to 25K as an example. The biggest changes I've noticed though is in cleaning up misspellings, punctuation errors, and mathematical equations. The 2013-2014 edition was littered with this stuff making it difficult at times to follow along. Having gone through most of the book I can say that it is a lot better, however are some of these things still remain. For example, at the bottom of page 521 they have an example of the minimum amount of gross income needed in order to require a return to be filed, the formula they have states "$6,500 + $4,000 + $1,550 = $11,850"....clearly this math does not work (the $6,500 should be $6,300 for the standard deduction amount). No it's not perfect, however it has been cleaned up a lot.

What is unfortunate IMO is the change of the study guide format. In late 2014 I had purchased the 2013-2014 study guide which was a comprehensive guide for all four sections (FAR, REG, BEC, AUD) of the CPA exam for around $100. Wiley offered a separate workbook for purchase with practice problems from all of the sections for around $200. What I did, and probably most did, was skip on purchasing the work book in favor of purchasing access to the online test bank. Wiley has now done away with that. They no longer sell a comprehensive book for all the sections, instead you have to buy each section individually which comes with the reading and practice problems. Due to that reason I've knocked them down to 3 stars because the book(s) are just 'ok' when you would need to spend $250 for the full set.

Instead of supplementing the Wiley Test Bank with this book I would recommend that you use cpareviewforfree.com and/or Ninja multiple choice problems. It's a cheaper way to go plus the questions are a lot more difficult. I've already sat for REG and in my opinion the multiple choice questions on the Wiley Test Bank, as well as what are in this book, aren't at the level of difficulty that you need to be prepared for the actual exam (I can only speak on REG exclusively for this). The practice questions on cpareviewforfree.com and the Ninja MCQ's are much more difficult and really challenge your understanding of the material. There are even some questions from both of these alternative sources that bring up topics not covered in the Wiley Study Guide.

Great book for CPA exam

I am in love with this book.
I just finished college, work for a CPA, and am on track to testing for my license.
My employer recommended wiley for the exam (he said wiley review books cover about 75% of the exam), and I bought the books to start studying for. I just started reading through the regulation study guide, so I'm only a few chapters through the book, but I like how I can review questions after each topic is covered--this shows whether or not I truly understood the concepts and that I'm able to apply the concepts in simulations.
I would definitely recommend this book to others who study for the exam!!

Pros and Cons

I passed the tests and I studied only the Wiley exam reviews. I thought about switch to Becker on my last REG, but decided to stay since I'm so used to it and already knew the way to navigate through Wiley books after three tests with them.

I bet no one is still buying this...the new exams are here and you need new books. But anyway about this book, people are right that Wiley writes encyclopedia not exam guides : ) Becker is much more handy. It cuts out some content and had focuses, exactly what Wiley needs. Don't expect timely suggestions on what will be more or less tested in the real tests in this book.

Encyclopedia have their own pros and cons. This book itself is very lengthy already, and I thank the writers for not killing me by not making it any longer. But seriously I don't remember seeing any content in real tests beyond Wiley study guide series coverage (in all 4 subjects), which is its pro. And the con is, this book kind of treats all topics equally: sometimes you feel you just don't get enough examples on certain topics but for most times too many of them.

Overall, I do believe study guides should have focuses on certain topics to shield candidates from being overwhelmed. That's why it's called a guide. If you decide to go with this one, make sure you don't exhaust every detail to save time and effort. Learn to let go certain contents and you should be okay.

Interesting and Educational!

"High-Tech Trash" tells of primitive computer recycling efforts in Ghana's capital. They break copper yokes off picture tubes, littering the ground with shards containing lead, a neurotoxin, and cadmium, a carcinogen that damages lungs and kidneys. They strip resalable parts such as drives and memory chips. Then they rip out wiring and burn the plastic. Broken monitors float in the lagoon, soon to wash into the ocean. PCs are not the only "fuel" - about 25 million TVs are taken out of service yearly. Meanwhile, about 180 million TVs, desktop PCs, and other components as of 2005 sit in storage, according to the EPA, with goodly amounts of gold and silver that are environmentally preferable to recover than re-mine.

Ghana is not the only recipient of e-waste. China has, until recently, been a major player. The good news is that some major recyclers have created safe, profitable sites.

"The Emptied Prairie" is a story about North Dakota one of the windiest and coldest states. Railroads railroads lured largely Norwegian and German settlers into North Dakota with promises of homesteads. People believed rain would follow the plow. But they were wrong, and debris of an abandoned lives is prevalent. Wolves and moose are returning.

A Great Introduction to Installation Art

As noted by Hal Foster and Jean Baudrillard, now is the era where media used by artists have become 'non-specific' and confusing. This is the postmodern age where purity of medium is not an issue to the artist anymore. Taken over is a more adventurous and eclectic use of media involving as many sensory interactions as possible from the spectators. Thsi is what contemporary Installation is about as reflected from this book.

Concept and context of artwork are in precendence, opening more out-of-the-world possibilities in the making process of artists. It is a challenge to both artists and spectators in enabling more stimulating and shocking experiences from the work.

This book is divided into genre and theme according to aspects of 'escape', 'author and institution', 'exchange and interaction', 'time and narrative' and 'body of the audience'. All are essences of contemporary installation which is always an unexpected sensory experience with new insights.

Work of Meschac Gaba (Museum Shop, 2001), Mark Pvell (Supply and Demand, 2001) and David Bunn (I Feel Better Now, I Feel the Same Way, 1996) are life-like and realistically interesting.

Whereas, surrealistically creative and escapist are Live Forever (2001) by Lee Bul and Believe/Disbelieve by Mischa kuball.

It is definitely a book worth collecting for contemporary Installation and a great update on postmodren art-making.

Haven't read it yet, but it seems comprehensive and well informed. The photos are great and it covers the wide spectrum of installation art from its origin to its place and function in contemporary art. Covers a wide variety of artists also.

All hype; buy a real book on social media, not this one

First, the positive: The authors list many of the social media technologies available at the time of publication and provide decent statistics on social media usage. The problem is you could get the same statistics and more for free by reading a Pew report.

There's plenty not to like in this book:

First, the authors appear to have groundswell tourette syndrome. Just as Rudy Giuliani can't get through a sentence without mentioning 9/11, the authors can barely go through a chapter without mentioning the word "groundswell." It's as though the authors took a bunch of verbs, added them to the word groundswell, and voila, a book was born.

All the chapter titles treat the groundswell as some sort of mysterious, independent force that companies must harness through mystical Jiu jitsu. (And yes, I am quoting, they compare themselves to sensei and say they are teaching you social media Jiu jitsu.)

Second, the authors mention Digg and General Motors as two key examples of how companies can harness the groundswell. They say Kevin Rose of Digg clearly "gets it" about the Net. Yes, Rose got it so much that he ultimately had to sell the company for $500,000. Another key example in the book comes from GM, a company that almost died until the government stepped in to bail it out.

If you like hype, you will love this book. You will learn that "the groundswell comes from the collision of three forces: people, economics, and technology." That's shocking because nothing else in society results from the confluence of people, economics, and technology. And the authors note that you'll learn little about managing the groundswell from learning about the technology because the groundswell is a force to be mastered, as I said, much like Jiu jitsu. Other interesting tidbits are "this new class of software is so different that O'Reilly has dubbed it Web 2.0." Yeah, because calling something by a hyped-up moniker shows how revolutionary it is. As for Wikipedia, the authors say that "the masses determine what's on it." They make no mention of the gatekeepers who control editorial content. Also, the authors tell you that "the groundswell has changed the balance of power," and to harness it, you must learn great strategies like these: Learn about blogging by reading blogs and starting one! Learn about social networking by opening an account! The authors note that Amazon reviews or Twitter followers are another great example of the groundswell, but they don't tell you that companies often manipulate reviews or buy followers.

None of this is meant as a "dig" at Digg or at the authors. It's just that the world is more complicated than they lay it out to be. Rather than hype, the reader would benefit from some real evidence-based insights on social media. Sadly, you won't find that here. Take it from me, as a member of the groundswell, don't buy this book and keep looking.

It's ok.

I had to read this for college. It was a good book for me though as I am in the web development business and it is important for me to understand some of the social media concepts out there.

This book I have to say, however, feels very watered down for casual readers. I've been in the web business almost 10 years now, and I have to say that this is not the greatest book for someone that already has technical knowledge. It has many bare bone basic concepts about social media sites and feels like a "how to" guide for corporate head-honchos. The author of this text makes up a lot of their own terminology and key-concepts behind social media including the term "groundswell". Many of its concepts revolve around social media technology such as Twitter and Facebook. Social media can go out of fashion as quickly as it gained popularity. I wouldn't recommend a corporate business do everything this book says, although it has some good advice for those who are clueless about implementing their business in social media.

This is an interesting read, but I'm not too crazy about it nor it's concepts. I have to question, how have the authors gained some of the knowledge they have and who are they to really set the standards for social media? It's a decent book and not many others out there are like it, but I think someone can write something better out there. Average book in general. Take what you can from it but don't believe everything it says in my professional opinion. 3/5

Great book for numerous reasons

Groundswell is a hit for a number of reasons:
(1) It's current: Although published in 2011, the book is very up-to-date. This is good and bad, as very quickly it will become outdated.

(2) It's helpful: Instead of just listing advice for readers, like the groundswell itself, the book tries to relate to the reader. It gives plenty of case studies and real-life stories, and readers find themselves connecting with the authors.

(3) It's readable: It is written in such a readable fashion that anyone, tech-savvy or not, can enjoy it. While giving details of the groundswell concept, it also gives a basic overview of social media; none of the concepts are complicated or overbearing.

(4) It's about relationships: The book, while seemingly data driven and technology-focused, is really about relationships. "Never forget that the groundswell is about person-to-person activity" (280). Groundswell is about wielding our social media revolution to build and sustain relationships. Doing this requires patience, commitment and the right attitude.

Overall, it is an easy read, but it will train your mind to think differently about social media.
